3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies

Delicious Peanut Butter Cookies

Peanut Butter Cookies

Peanut Butter Cookies have peanut butter as their chief ingredient. It is generally accepted that the peanut butter cookie originated in the United States some time around 1910.

George Washington Carver was a big promoter of the peanut. The Bo Weevil had destroyed the cotton crop so George Washington Carver tried to come up with as many ways to use peanuts as he could. In his book how to grow the peanut and prepare it for human consumption there were three recipes for peanut cookies. The recipes called for crushed or chopped cookies. It wasn't until the early 1920s that the new recipe books called for peanut butter. And if you haven't tried Jiff Peanut Butter in your recipes for cookies you should. Because Jiff really does make the best peanut butter cookies.

When you bake always use the best ingredients possible if you want to end up with the best cookies possible.

Those first very early peanut butter cookies were rolled out and cut out or dropped by the spoon full onto baking sheets. It was about this time that those famous fork marks got onto the cookies. And from then on we had cooks all over the world using a fork to make those famous marks on the cookies.

If you really need to know exactly where the first fork marks appeared on cookies it was in the 1933 Pillsbury Cook Book in a recipe for peanut butter balls that cooks were told to use a fork to make those distinctive marks on cookies. And the rest is of course history.

We now know that peanut butter was made on plantations in the New Orleans area of Louisiana as early as 1883. And if they were making peanut butter I bet someone was making peanut butter cookies in some form or the other.

We know that by 1911 that several varieties of peanut butter was being made and sold in grocery stores. And you know that as soon as that first commercially produced peanut butter was on the shelf's some one was making peanut butter.

Wilson's Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe Made In The U.S. White House.

President Wilson's wife is said to be the first U.S. presidents wife to make and serve peanut butter cookies in the U.S. White House. And yes Mrs Wilson was the one making the peanut butter cookies. In those days the U.S. Presidents wives still did some of the cooking. Mrs Wilson made the cookies and served them at afternoon teas in the White House. The cookies were also often passed out to early tourists visiting the White House. The presidents daughter Jessie Wilson was married while her father was in the White House and she was called the famous peanut butter cookie maker.

Here is that early peanut butter cookie recipe as it was made by Jessie Wilson.

Ingredients For The Peanut Butter Cookies Made By Jessie Wilson.

1. One Tablespoon Shortening.

2. Three Tablespoons Of Peanut Butter.

3. One And One Half Cups Granulated White Sugar.

4. Three Tablespoons Butter Milk.

5. One Tablespoon Of Baking Soda.

6. Two Eggs.

Then in this recipe plain flour was beaten in to make a dough stiff enough to roll. The cookies were cut out with a round metal cookie or biscuit cutter and baked until they were golden brown. I've made this recipe and it will produce delicious peanut butter cookies if you'll follow along with the recipe carefully. If you do you'll end up with a peanut butter cookie much like was served during the Wilson administration in the White House. Incidentally you need to cook the cookies at 350 degrees and you want to cook them until they are just brown around the edges and take them out of the oven. Let them set about five minutes on the pan before you take them off the pan.
