Food that lifts your spirit not your buns - Delicious Guilt Free Food

Updated on July 6, 2009

I am a great lover of food and with more and more people on diets that revolve around eating like a sparrow or eating the same dull thing at every meal a lot of people have forgotten about how to sit down and really enjoy what your eating :).

There are so many foods out there that are so delicious and you've really got to appreciate the flavour and the beauty of it all and it definitely doesn't have add to your bun size:).

for me a Food that lifts my spirit is something fresh, simple or homemade.

Fresh Berries

One of my favourite foods to lift the spirit is Fresh Berries of all kinds Blueberries, Strawberries, Mulberries and especially Raspberries for me.

My Grandma lives up in the country and whenever she comes down to visit she will stop by a local Raspberry farm and pick up fresh and frozen Raspberry goods. Whenever she comes down my cupboards will be filled with all sorts of jams and conserves and my freezer full of freshly frozen raspberries.

Raspberries are a great guilt free snack at anytime of the day chocked full of antioxidants not to mention that the taste of fresh raspberries is amazing :)

I usually eat my raspberries with a dollop of light ice cream or organic yoghurt, it can be very addictive it also great as a drink with some soda water or in a smoothie. So if it’s been sometime since you've had berries go out and get yourself some and enjoy

Fresh Raw Salmon

My next favourite spirit lifting food is fresh raw salmon or sashimi and some of you may find this odd especially those of you who are anti-seafood but believe me there is nothing better than a fresh fillet of salmon. For those who cant stand the fishy smell really fresh fish should not smell fishy at all.

The best way to eat raw salmon is to have it slightly chilled and use a dipping sauce with soy sauce and wasabi or soy sauce and vinegar.

There are many great recipes for raw salmon out there that involve using lemon juices or vinegars to partially cook the raw salmon and still be able to eat it without having to cook it :).

Home Grown Vegetables

A spirit lifter are home grown vegetables not just because of the incredible taste of organically grown produce but also the pleasure of tasting the fruits of your labor.

Its also great to watch the lifecycle of your vegetable plants as you care for them and let me tell you I was as happy as a school kid when my very first sweet corns started to pop out.

The best way to eat fresh sweet corn is to cook it as soon as you have pulled it from the plant, the longer you wait to eat it the more the sugars will turn into starches. So remember to get your pot or grill ready to ensure the best tasting corn:)

The great thing about sweet corn is its so simple, I used to go to local fair's in the winter and they would sell hot char grilled corn on a stick covered in butter, with salt and pepper.

some of my Favourites

Some of my favourite dishes to really pick me up and make me feel rejuvenated are classic Japanese Dishes.

The first one is called Asari Butter which simply means Clams in Butter, Its a delicious soup made using small clams (pippies) , butter, garlic and leaks or spring onions and its very refreshing in the winter months:) give it a try next time your at a Japanese restaurant or wip it up at home its probably the Japanese alternative to clam chowder.

The next dish that’s so simply as well as healthy is Octopus in a Vinegar Sauce, First you chop up an adult octopus into small pieces and soak it in rice vinegar and add a few thinly sliced cucumbers and Bam your in heaven:P well pretty close for me

Octopus:) looks a little scary but very gooood

Hope you enjoyed the foods that lift my spirit and avoid the enlarging of the buns:) When I look back at the list of foods its quite a strange mix of foods. Sometimes a heavenly peach just hits the spot
