Healthy Breakfast Choices

Updated on December 20, 2008

Your whole life, you've been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast is important, but what you eat in the morning is just as important as the fact that you do eat.

Whether you're trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, it's essential to make healthful choices for your morning meal. However, if you check out most restaurant or fast food establishment breakfast menus, you won't find anything much of anything that isn't packed with fat and calories. Be sure to make wise choices when dining out in them morning – or better yet, stock your pantry with healthy choices you can enjoy at home or on the go.

Healthy Cereal Choices

The health benefits of whole grain are widely known, making cereal a seemingly wise selection for your morning meal. Many cereals are great choices, but others are packed with sugar and artificial ingredients. Watch labels carefully so you can be sure the cereals that you select truly are good for you.

The fact that a cereal is "made with whole grain" does not necessarily mean that it is a healthy choice – it just means there is whole grain somewhere in the ingredient list. Check ingredients carefully, being mindful of the fact that the items are listed in the order in which they are present in the food item. Whole grain should be at or near the very top of the list.

One of the best cereal brands for those searching for a healthful morning meal is Mom's Best Naturals. This product line features several varieties, each of which is free from hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial preservatives. Flavors include: Honey Grahams, Honey Nut Toasty O's, Oats and Honey Blend, Raisin Bran, Sweetened Wheat-fuls, Toasted Cinnamon Squares, and several others.

Frozen Breakfast Entrees

If you're looking for an easy and healthy frozen breakfast option, consider stocking your freezer with Weight Watchers Smart Ones Morning Express breakfast entrees. Available flavors include: Breakfast Quesadilla, Canadian Style Bacon English Muffin Sandwich, English Muffin Sandwich, and Stuffed Breakfast Sandwich. Each nutritious selection has 250 calories or fewer and is made with egg whites, lean meat, reduced fat cheese, and veggies. What better way to get a hot, healthy breakfast in your own home every morning?

Healthy Selections for Breakfast

These are just a few of the many available healthy breakfast options. The next time you find yourself reaching for a mega muffin or fat-laden breakfast biscuit with sausage or bacon, stop and think about the other, healthier choices available to you. After all, you'll be off to a great start if you begin the day with a healthy meal.

Thanks for the tips. I always feel like it is harder to eat a healthy breakfast than any other meal. I also make my own burritos and freeze them ahead of time so that I can enjoy them anytime I want them and I can control what goes in them.
