Smoothie is a very nourishing thick cocktail form blended fresh fruits, berries and sometime vegetables. When fruits and berries are blended, they turn into wholesome, nutritious, and incredibly delicious cocktail. Smoothie is number one drink for those who want to live healthy lifestyle.

Smoothies are served in regular or cocktail glasses with a straw. Smoothie is not just a drink, it is not a meal either, it is something in the middle.

Nowadays you don't necessarily have to go somewhere to buy smoothie. You can make one at home easily. Today I'd like to share how to make a strawberry banana smoothie in the convenience of your home. The only thing you need is blender and all the ingredients.

The History Of Smoothie

Smoothie came from the habit of drinking cocktails from freshly squeezed juices in tropical countries of Latin America. This tradition came to the United States where smoothie has become very popular.

First smoothies were sold in 1930-s in California, but it gained its popularity only in 1960-s when it got to the stores which sold healthy food. In 1990-s and 2000-s smoothies appeared in regular cafes, restaurants and coffee houses, as well as bottled in supermarkets all over the world.

The main smoothie ingredients usually are fruits, vegetables and berries. Also almost all recipes use ice. Most popular berries for smoothies are raspberry, blueberry, strawberry or cherry. Other ingredients, such as milk, yogurt, walnuts, honey, green tea, syrups, herbal mixtures etc. can be used as an addition.

Health Benefits

Smoothies retain all the fiber and vitamins included in them, and often are part of a healthy lifestyle. They are in the same line with the products like tofu, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc.

Smoothies contain lots of vitamins and antioxidants, and also provides a lot of energy. It is often included in athletes' diet. Many people adhere to the principle "five glasses a day."

Smoothies are also said to be natural antidepressants.

All in all these fresh cocktails are not just fun and tasty, but also great help in fitness and healthy complexion. Currently only New York and London have more than 15,000 smoothie bars.

The main mistake of smoothie-lovers is that most of the people consider it just as a drink, an addition to the meal. However, some smoothies, for example infamous King's 20-ounce Banana Boat made of vanilla ice cream and bananas, has as many calories as a standard meal.

Smoothie is an ideal breakfast for those who want a healthy and quick meal without unnecessary carbs.
