Updated on March 16, 2011

Looking for an easy and tasty soup idea for chilly winter evenings? If you have a can or two of cream of broccoli soup in your pantry, you're just a few minutes away from a terrific meal that tastes great and is really easy to prepare.

There are several different ways to turn a simple can of cream of broccoli soup into a great first course our entrée. Simply prepare the canned soup according to the instructions on the can, and mix in a few additions that can change it from ordinary canned soup to an extraordinary gourmet style entrée.

Add-in spices:

You can adjust the flavor of your broccoli pepper soup by adding in your own special blend of spices and seasonings. Spices that blend perfectly with broccoli pepper soup include:

  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Italian Seasoning Blend
  • Black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper
  • White pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Thyme
  • Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning

Note: You probably won't want or need to add any salt, as canned soups tend to be rather high in sodium.

Broccoli Soup Recipe Blends:

  • Broccoli Pepper Soup: Stir in roasted red peppers
  • Broccoli Cheddar Soup: Stir in shredded cheddar cheese and allow it to melt
  • Broccoli Potato Soup: Stir in cooked diced potatoes; it's even better if you add cheddar cheese too! (The next time you're cooking potatoes for potato salad, throw in a few extras and save them to try this great recipe idea.)
  • Broccoli, Ham, and Cheese Soup: Mix in chopped cook ham and cheddar cheese. (this is a terrific way to use up leftover ham when you're sick of ham sandwiches!)
  • Extra Broccoli - Boost the nutrition of any of these cream of broccoli recipe variations by stirring in extra broccoli. Simply thaw a box of frozen broccoli, drain, add to the mixture, and heat.

Cooking Instructions: No matter what you add to your cream of broccoli soup, it's a good idea to allow it to simmer over low heat for at least thirty minutes, to give the flavors a chance to meld.
