Filet mignon! That word is so interesting. It is French for "cute fillet" or "dainty fillet" and when I look at one for the first time I thought, "That's it!" Then I ate some and I thought, "Good Lord above, I have died and gone to carnivore heaven!"
Now that I have become more health conscious and I am cutting back on my red meat intake I have resolved that the red meat I am allowed has to be top of the line. Don't get me wrong, I get meat still, but I have found some great alternatives that I will mention in later articles. For now though I am focusing on the king cut of meat that is sooooooooooo gooooood! What is more, you will now know how to get those good cuts without having to break more than one of your piggy banks. (Darn, now I want pork chops!)
Cuts of Meat
Filet mignon is just a cut of meat.Granted it is a really good cut of meat, but that is all it is just the same. I was at my local store salivating over the pre-packaged, bacon wrapped stuff when my butcher told me so. You see, filet mignon is just a cut off of another cut of meat commonly known as tenderloin. When I found this out, the heavens opened and angels sang the Hallelujah chorus! Tenderloin, while not being cheap by any means is at least cheaper than individual cuts of filet mingon pound for pound. So, I immediately took out a second mortgage (totally kidding here!) and bought a bunch of tenderloin.
Once I had my single package of tenderloin it was simple enough to cut it into the filet mingon. For the 4th of July I tossed them on the barbeque and impressed my guests with a high priced steak at about what I would have spent for t-bones. Granted it was less meat that t-bones, but quality or quantity was a good thing personally. That and it wasn't that much less anyway. It was a win/win/win. My carnivore was fed, my inner cheapskate wasn't having epileptic fits and my friends were impressed. All in all a great day!
My Soap Box
The reason I wrote this is not just to show how you can get superior cuts of meat at a lower cost. My reasoning is that if you have a nice cut of meat you may just eat less. There is tons of research out there that shows that high consumption of animal products equals major health issues. I am not saying go vegan or vegetarian. What I am saying is moderation in your meat eating habits is a good thing. I have found that if I eat quality meat when I do eat it and then focus on a more veggie based diet I feel much better. I still have a long way to go, but the idea is moderation with the meat. Enjoy it but limit it. I hope this article has help you. I wish you happy eating and a long and healthy life!
