Leftover Ham Recipe Ideas

Updated on March 23, 2008

I like to cook hams fairly regularly, because it's so easy to come up with creative things to do with leftover ham. Ham is one of the most inexpensive meats. You can usually find hams for less then $2 per pound most of the time, and for even less around holidays. They store well in the freezer for a while, so you can stock up whenever you find a good sale on ham.

Periodically, I'll bake a ham on a weekend evening. We'll enjoy a ham dinner, complete with holiday-style side dishes for a day or two no matter what time of the year it is. After we're tired of that, we still usually have a pretty good bit of ham leftover to use for other purposes.

Leftover Ham Recipe Ideas

Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

One of the easiest and most obvious things to do with leftover ham is to create simple and delicious ham and cheese sandwiches. I often make cold ham sandwiches to take to work for lunch, and prepare hot ham and cheese sandwiches for meals at home.

Ham and Biscuits

Ham biscuits are delicious for breakfast or any other meal. Simply prepare your favorite biscuit recipe, whether it's a scratch recipe, is made from a box, or comes out of a refrigerated roll. When you biscuits are prepared, simply add warm slices of ham to them. This is particularly delicious with honey drizzled over the ham, or with sharp cheddar added.

Alternately, if you use a scratch recipe or a mix, you can cut up leftover ham into small pieces and stir it directly into the batter with some sharp shredded cheddar cheese. You'll end up with delicious ham biscuits that can be enjoyed as a complete meal, or served as a side dish. They're delicious dipped in honey or your favorite syrup.

Ham Omelets and Other Egg Dishes

If you enjoy homemade omelets, you probably don't need me to tell you that cut up leftover ham is a perfect addition to your favorite omelet recipe. You can also easily stir extra ham into your favorite quiche and frittata recipes. Of course, leftover ham is perfect served alongside scrambled eggs. Just heat it in your favorite frying pan and enjoy!

Macaroni and Cheese With Ham

If your family enjoys macaroni and cheese, you can easily turn your favorite recipe for this tasty dish into a main dish by adding chunks of leftover ham. Simply prepare your favorite macaroni and cheese recipe, place it in a casserole dish, stir in your leftover ham, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees until it is bubbly and heated through.

Other Ideas?

These are only a few of the great things you can do with leftover ham. If you'd like to add any of your favorite ideas, please feel free to post them in the comments section below!
