Mother in Laws Family Recipe for Kadhi
In our family known as Kadhi. This recipe is in loving memory of my mother-in-law's passion that continues to live on, and considered a comfort meal made with love.

Ingredients
Bara (Veda):
- 2 cups pea dhal, clean and soak overnight
- 2 green chilies
- 2 red chilies
- 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 2 strips spring onion, chopped
- 4 sprigs coriander, chopped
- ½ teaspoon tumeric
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon salt
- oil for frying
Tomato Chutney:
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 sprig curry leaf
- ½ teaspoon masala
- 1 teaspoon tamarind, soak in 3 tablespoons boiled water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 tomatoes, chopped
Veda instructions
- Finely grind pea dhal, with red and green chilies in food processor
- Pour out into a bowl, adding cumin seeds and salt,
- Add chopped spring onion and coriander, mix together
- Heat ¾ oil in a wok to moderate heat, the oil must be enough to cover each bara
- Taking a half size hand portion of batter
- Flatten to the size of a mini disc,
- Place one into the wok testing the heat, ensuring it does not sink to the bottom,
- Fry till golden browned and crisp on both sides
Chutney instructions
- Add 4 tablespoons oil
- Braise by adding onions, curry leaf, masala
- Allow a sizzle for 2 minutes
- Add tomatoes, salt and sugar
- Removing the pips from tamarind, add the juice to the chutney
- Leave to cook on low heat for 20 minutes until tomatoes have melted, creating a nice thick gravy
- Switch off the heat, add the fried veda to your chutney
- Sprinkle chopped coriander for garnish
- Ready to serve
