Nana's Depression Era Chocolate Chip Cookies

My Nana's recipe for chocolate chip cookies from the time of the depression when butter was hard to find/expensive.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 3/4 cup Brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 Eggs (beaten)
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Hot Water
  • 2 1/4 cups Sifted Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 cup Chopped Walnuts
  • 1 large Package Semisweet chocolate Chips
  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Cream crisco, add brown sugar, granulated sugar, and eggs.
  2. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to mixture in step one.
  3. Slowly mix in the flour, salt, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  4. Mix nuts and chocolate chips in by hand.
  5. Drop by half teaspoons on a greased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake 10-12 minutes.
