Nana's Depression Era Chocolate Chip Cookies
My Nana's recipe for chocolate chip cookies from the time of the depression when butter was hard to find/expensive.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Crisco
- 3/4 cup Brown sugar
- 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 2 Eggs (beaten)
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 tsp Hot Water
- 2 1/4 cups Sifted Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1 cup Chopped Walnuts
- 1 large Package Semisweet chocolate Chips
- Preheat oven to 375°. Cream crisco, add brown sugar, granulated sugar, and eggs.
- Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to mixture in step one.
- Slowly mix in the flour, salt, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
- Mix nuts and chocolate chips in by hand.
- Drop by half teaspoons on a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake 10-12 minutes.
