Simple Jell-O Shot Recipe

Updated on July 12, 2018

Most people love Jell-O and nothing beats a shooter. There are millions of different variations of Jell-O shots but only a few ways to prepare the mixture. This is a super easy, basic recipe for Jell-O shots that you can use with any flavor powder you want, and you can switch up the alcohol depending on your preference (i.e. tequila, vodka, rum). Of course, you can always make them without alcohol and just prepare them the same way using plastic shot glasses.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Boiling Water
  • 1/2 Cup Cold Water
  • 1/2 Cup Vodka (or alcohol of choice)
  • 1 Package Jell-O Powder (your choice of flavor)

Instructions

  1. Add the package of Jell-O powder to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Pour boiling water into the boil and mix until the powder dissolves.
  3. Add a half cup of cold water and a half cup of alcohol to the mixture and stir until mixed. Note: You can adjust the amount of alcohol you add to make your shooters stronger or weaker, just ensure that you use one full cup of cold liquid and one full cup of boiling water.
  4. Add a half cup of cold water and a half cup of alcohol to the mixture. Note: You can adjust the amount of alcohol you add to make your shooters stronger or weaker, just ensure that you use one full cup of cold liquid and one full cup of boiling water.
  5. Pour the mixture into plastic one or two-ounce shot glasses. Leave space so that you can place a lid without the Jell-O solidifying to it when it cools. Place them into the fridge until they're solidified, usually two to three hours .

Cool Jell-O Shooter Flavor Ideas

With just a basic recipe you can create so many different flavors and variations of Jell-O shooters. A few ideas are listed below. Pinterest is a great place to check out some creative shooter ideas.

Lemon-Lime: This is an old-time favorite flavor combo that's made by simply combining lemon and lime flavors.
You can use a lemon and lime flavored vodka if you have it. Prepare one flavor at a time. Once your mixture is prepared, pour one of the flavors into the shot glasses first, a little less than halfway up. Wait for that to solidify and add the other flavor. Solidify the second flavor and you have a layered lemon-lime Jell-O shooter.

Strawberry Daiquiri: This one is made with strawberry Jell-O powder and white rum. To add a little theme to your shooters you can sugar the rims of your shot glasses or sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top of your shots once they're solidified. You can also add a small piece of strawberry if you have them available.

You can use real strawberries as your shot glass. It's a little more time consuming and costly but the results are really neat. You need to hallow out each strawberry and fill it with your strawberry Jell-O mix. Then rim it with sugar.

Strawberry Margarita: This is made similar to the way the strawberry daiquiri is made except that you use tequila instead of rum for the margarita, you rim the glass with salt rather than sugar, and you can add a hint of lime to either.

.

Tequila Sunrise: This one is made using orange and strawberry or cherry flavored Jell-O powder and tequila. First you prepare the red colored Jell-O (Cherry or strawberry). Pour just enough of the mixture into the glasses to cover the bottom and so you can see it from the side. After the red solidifies pour the orange flavored mixture on top.

Strawberry Lemonade: This shooter is made using strawberry and lemon flavored Jell-O powders. You can choose which color you want to be on the bottom and which you want to be on the top. Prepare one of the flavors (the bottom layer) and pour it about halfway up the shot glass. Wait for it to solidify then do the same with the other flavor. You can garnish each with a small piece of strawberry or add a small piece of strawberry to your strawberry layer.

Margarita: The margarita Jell-O shot is made using lime Jell-O powder, tequila as your alcohol, triple sec, and salt. Once you prepare your mixture you pour it into the cups, leaving enough room to close the lid and allowing it to solidify without getting stuck to the lid. Once they're solid, sprinkle a pinch of salt on each or rim the glasses using lime juice and salt.

Where to Find Jell-O Shooter Supplies

The Jell-O powder can be bought at many supermarkets and grocery stores as well as online. It comes in a variety of flavors and it's always fun to experiment with different ones.

Plastic shot glasses can be found at party supply stores, some dollar stores and discount stores, and some grocery stores. They can also be found online at party supply websites or Amazon. The ones with the lids are typically best because they help to prevent things from getting in and contaminating your shots, and they're also helpful for transporting them.
