Snack Food Ideas for On-the-Go Energy: Trail Power and Organic Beef Jerky

Updated on October 21, 2007

When you have a hectic schedule, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain healthy eating habits. Sometimes I find myself running from one appointment or meeting to another with no time to stop for a meal.

The temptation to run through the closest drive-thru can be great when you're hungry and on the go. Even though some fast food outlets are offering healthy selections now, many of the healthiest choices (such as salads) aren't easy to consume on-the-go. A better solution for eating healthy when your schedule doesn't allow you to slow down long enought for a healthy meal or snack is to keep your backpack or briefcase stocked with healthy, high-energy treats that can provide you the nourishment you need without a lot of empty calories.

A few of my favorite high energy treats that are also organic include:

Navitas Naturals Trail PowerTM

Some trail mixes aren't much healthier than a candy bar. That isn't true with the Navitas Naturals line. These healthy snack mixes are designed specifically to appeal to savvy health and nutrition conscious consumers. They taste great, and offer lasting energy along with powerful nourishment.

The ingredients in Navitas Naturals snack mixes include raw organic nuts and berries that are certified as organic and kosher. Each variety is rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for maximum health benefits. Ingredients include:

  • Antioxidant rich Goji Berries from China
  • High Protein Inca Golden Berries from Columbia which are also rich in bioflavonoids
  • Vitamin C and iron-rich Mulberries from Turkey, which also contain the antioxidant resveratrol and provide protein
  • Cashews from Brazil, which are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, protein, and copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium
  • Raw chocolate in the form of Peruvian Cacao nibs, which provide many vitamins and minerals including, beta-carotene, zinc, chromium, magnesium and antioxidant flavonoids

Jack Link's Organic Beef Jerky

Beef jerky is one of my husband's favorite snack foods. He keeps some in his desk drawer at work, and we usually keep it in our pantry as well. He is very impressed with the new organic varieties from Jack Link's, which are available in several flavors (original, peppered, and teriyaki). They taste great and have no preservatives, no nitrites, and no msg in addition to being certified as organic. Beef jerky is a rich source of protein that is easy to transport and can easily be found in many retail outlets.

Suggestions for Healthy Snacking?

These are just a few of the many great options for healthy, on-the-go snacking that can help you get the energy you need without excess fat, calories, and preservatives. If you have other ideas for terrific, healthy snacks, please feel free to post them in the comments section!
