Thanksgiving in My Home

Updated on November 20, 2019

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was one of the most exciting holidays of the year in my home, where friends, families, and anyone in the neighborhood who was hungry came to eat and spend the day with my family. Now Thanksgiving in my home doesn't mean that much to anyone.

A Tragedy Before Thanksgiving In my Home

I never thought the happiness all of us once shared in my home on Thanksgiving day was gone. A couple of months before Thanksgiving, my son was killed, leaving all of us incapable of being happy. Thanksgiving was a tradition in my home, it was always celebrated and would be this year. I was determined to try and put smiles on the faces of my children, even though my heart wasn't in it. I told my family there would be a Thanksgiving even though their brother was gone. I wanted to hear the laughter coming from the living room as they watched their favorite football teams. There was no laughter just a few words as they spoke among themselves. I paraded around the kitchen cooking everyone favorite dish wiping away hot tears, asking God to let me make it through the day. I was looking for them to invite a few friends but no one came. I heard John my dead son yelling when are we going to eat, which brought a smile to my face. Dinner is ready I yelled.

The Dinner

The dining room table was set beautifully with my best china, silverware, with cloth folded napkin, seven of us sat at the large table, looking at the empty chair. I stood before the table I knew they were missing their brother. This Thanksgiving we are gathered here to celebrate this day without ED,

The empty chair belonged to my dead son. Nothing was said, the looks on their faces told the story, they didn't want to be there. After the blessing of the food, We ate in silence, watching the reactions of each other. After dinner, they made excuses to leave, kissing me on my cheek. After they left I went back and sat at the table, staring at the empty chair, with tears running down my face. Through my tears, I thought I saw my son sitting in the empty chair. Deep down I knew he would be there.

Another Thanksgiving day is upon Us

Another Thanksgiving is upon us, a day friends and families will celebrate this day, with laughter and joy while others will never forget.
