Top Reasons to Shop at Trader Joes

Updated on January 28, 2013

It's true sometimes, I spend more money than I should at Trader Joe's but it's because I trust their products. Below are my top reasons for shopping at Trader Joe's.

1) Flat Sided Whole Wheat Hot Dog Buns & Nitrate Free Hot Dogs

This probably won't be your top reason but I grew up in Ohio where we had regular ole hotdog buns. You know the ones that are rounded on both sides. Back home, we didn't care what the bun was like as long as it was topped with ketchup, onions, chili, sauerkraut or something delicious. In Maine, It's flat sided buns that everyone goes ga ga over. Here they do this cool thing where they grill their buns in butter so they have an even more intense flavor. Yummy!

The problem with flat sided buns is that they typically only come in one flavor - white. Nutritionally devoid white bread that I refuse to bring into our home. Yet make exceptions for on holidays and of course hotdog day.

That was until last summer when Trader Joes came to town. Now, I can buy nitrate free hotdogs at a reasonable price accompanied with flat sided whole wheat buns. Finally, I get my hotdog and grillable bun too! And my kids get a healthier version of their favorite junk food.

2. The Pledge to be GM Modified Grain Free:

Well at least that's what they claim and I like that. It really bothers me that 90% of the foods (and yes that may be an exaggeration) in your typical grocery store are made with gm modified grain.

We don't really know the long term affects of using grains like this. Maybe they're fine but some scientists are saying they aren't:

"The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) doesn’t think so. The Academy reported that “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system" Responsible Technology

Personally, I don't feel the need to take a risk with gm modified food. In fact, I go to great lengths to minimize our GM exposure. Call me crazy but I feel the extra money spent now will be a benefit to our health down the road.

3. Huge selection of Organic products:

Unless you are shopping at Whole Foods or your local health food store, it's challenging to find organic products. Let alone organic products at a reasonable price. Sometimes, it blows my mind on how much money I save at Trader Joe's buying the same products I always buy.

Here are a few of my all time favorites:

  • organic greens
  • organic spices
  • organic greek yogurt
  • organic pasta and sauce
  • organic frozen beans & broccoli
  • organic coffee
  • organic cereal selection - prices blow Whole Foods out of the water!

Help me find even more reasons to love Trader Joe's...
