If you’re traveling North or South on I-95 through southeastern Georgia, You may want to check out a spot not far from exits 87 or 90. Richmond Hill, Georgia is home to some of the best home style cooking on the planet! Yes a little spot in the business district of a little town just 11 miles south of Savannah, serves Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, and is a local favorite. The good news for you is you get a real break from the typical fast food spot, and you can call your order in from the Highway and it will be ready when you arrive.

Gary Breon, the owner, has been operating Plums Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop since 2003 when he purchased it from its previous owners. It was in fact struggling at the time and coupled with ill health on the part of the original owners, Plums presented Gary with a challenge. One he saw as a chance to use all of his Management and Leadership skills, he developed as a Major and Public Health Officer in the Army, and turn it around.

Turn it around he did, his team building and management skills are immediately apparent as one watches the Staff operate the restaurant like a fine Swiss watch.  Customers are greeted with a smile, the food is prepared with efficiency and care, by Jackie in the kitchen, served hot by Michelle, in the mornings and Mike in the Afternoons, Assistant Manager Adam does a bit of everything and supervises when Gary is not there. You can see the pride they all take in their work and as Michelle says “I Love my regular customers and I have a great Boss.”

This attitude gives the customers a great experience, and fosters deep and lasting loyalty. When I talked to Jamie Royal while he was having a Club Sandwich for lunch, he summed it up well when he said,”It’s simple really it’s a friendly place where you get great food at a good value.” Wednesday mornings see the assemblage of the DP Club (Dedicated People), a group of about a dozen old friends that have been having Breakfast at Plums since it opened in 1999.

The cuisine at Plums includes a wide range of breakfast choices including breakfast sandwiches that have the choices between ham, sausage or bacon with eggs and cheese. If you’d like a sit down breakfast the omelets or egg combinations fill the bill, or waffles and syrup can fill the hungriest man, woman or child.

Lunch or dinner have a wide range of choices with over 20 different sandwiches that include both hot and cold choices, from Pulled Pork, to Hot Pastrami, and Dagwood to the Sorry Charlie, and of course their signature sandwich the Plums Club. They have Hot Coffee to Chocolate Shakes and Malts; desserts include Ice Cream Cones hand scooped into a rolled waffle cone or Chocolate Chip Cookies.

If you need catered trays of sandwiches, cookies, or snacks, they can be purchased in Medium 6-8 servings or large 10-14. Soups, Fruit, Tuna, Chicken, or Shrimp Salad can be purchased by the pint or quart. All in all many, many options for dine in or take out, and all can be ordered in advance for pickup.

All in all, if you find yourself hungry on I-95, hold the thought till exits, 87 or 90 and pull on in to town, past the fast food joints, and get food down home healthy, yes Good Food at an affordable Price.

I will book mark this so I can visit there on our way to Florida in the spring too. We like the mom and pop places way better than fast food. Thanks for sharing this.

Sounds like a fabulous place. My mouth is watering. I just might make it down there one day. I may want to confine my travels to the U.S. and only places I can drive to. It's the TSA that scares me more than the terrorists!

What? No Biscuits and Gravy on a 10x10 cookie sheet? I thought that was a Southern Standard. All you can eat...... nice review never can tell I may pass that way again some time, heck it's only 40 hours from here ;)

      Hmrjmr,

There was once a time when many mom and pop restaurants dotted the countryside where home-made food was the order of the day. I'm glad there is still at least one still around.
