Cheese Straws

Cheese straws are yummy, slightly crunchy strips of spicy cheese heaven. They make an excellent party food or snack. They are not difficult to make and do not require a lot of cooking time. These have always been one of my favorite finger foods at parties or showers.

Cook Time

Prep time: 30 min
Cook time: 15 min
Ready in: 45 min
Yields: Several Servings


  • 1 1/3 stick butter or margarine
  • 1 lb sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • to taste tabasco sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • to taste salt & pepper


  1. Blend butter and cheese together.
  2. Add flour, baking powder, tabasco,garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix it in good. Dough will be stiff.
  3. Fill a cookie press (medium star) and press out onto a baking sheet. Make strips as long as you wish.
  4. Bake at 325 degrees for about 12 - 15 minutes. Cook until crisp but not brown. Browned cheese straws taste bitter.
