Baked Apples are Easier to Make than Pie
I will share a super simple recipe with you that will start your mouth watering.
Baked apples. Easy to make. Put them together in less than 15 minutes. Bake for 30-40 minutes.
Apples are delicious fresh, but if you sprinkle them with some cinnamon and sugar, then bake them, they make a fantastic dessert!

These can be done with any number of apples. I normally make around five, even if I am only feeding one or two people. They keep well in the refrigerator and never go to waste.
I have heard that you should not use MacIntosh or Empire apples for baking, because they won't hold their shape. That is not true for this recipe. I have often used these apples. The skin is left on the apples which holds them together.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 45-60 minutes
- 5 Tart Apples
- 2 C. Cinnamon Sugar, or to taste
- (Cinnamon Sugar is made by adding 1 TBS of Cinnamon to 1/2 Cup of Sugar)
- 1/4 cup butter
- Core apples and remove skin from top 1/4 of apple.
- Place apples in low sided baking dish or pie pan.
- Fill each apple with a tsp of butter and put remaining butter, by the teaspoon, around the apples in the pan surrounding the apples. This makes for a nice juice to scoop onto the apples when done.
- Liberally sprinkle sugar mixture in each apple. Do not try to keep the sugar off the tops of the apples or off the pan bottom. This all adds to the flavor and the sauce.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes, or until fork inserted in apple slides in smoothly.
Trim the peel from the top 1/4 of the apple - Remove the core.
Make sure you get the seeds and seed casings out of the apple.
If you are using a vegetable peeler like I am here, then place apple flat on top of a cutting board.
Twist the peeler to cut out the core and it will lift out.
You may need to dive down with the point of the vegetable peeler a second time, to retrieve some seeds and seed casings you might have missed.
I put my finger inside to feel for any seed casings as they are hard to see.
Place Cored Apples in a Shallow Baking Dish or Pie Plate - Add butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon
You do not have to measure the butter. Put a little dab into each apple center. Cut the remaining butter up into approximately 6 small pieces and sprinkle it around the dish.
Pour the sugar mixture into the center of each apple. Again, it is not necessary to measure. Sprinkle the remaining sugar on top of the apples, letting it spill off the sides. Then pour the rest onto the dish.
Place into a preheated 350 Deg F. oven and test after 30 to 35 minutes.

This is the tool Clara mentioned in her video. The one that her mother used to core apples with.
Clara stated that it was more difficult to core the apples with a knife. Her mom had a tool for removing the core.
That tool would be one simular to this vegetable peeler.
If you do not have a vegetable peeler - A good paring knife will also work.
I prefer the peeler, but a sharp pointed paring knife should be able to do the trick.

Which would you prefer? - Apple Pie, or Baked Apples?
Sometimes the answer to this question will depend on if you are the one who has to prepare the dessert.
Baking apples are so much easier than making a pie. If I am doing the cooking, I'd vote for the baked apples.
If I invited you over for dinner, which would you like? A slice of pie, or a baked apple?
Skin or No Skin? - Would you eat the skin of the baked apple?
I eat the skin on the baked apple. I find it to be a little more tart than the rest of the apple.
Isn't skin where a lot of the nutrients are?
I know a lot of people who throw the skin out.
