How to Make Blueberry Crumble Recipes for the Whole Family to Enjoy

What can be better than sitting by a warm fire on a cold day eating a piping hot blueberry crumble topped with your favorite topping of custard or cream?


However sitting outside on the patio on a sunny day eating blueberry crumble and ice cream sounds pretty great too!

I have put together some great blueberry crumble recipes including the quick and easy blueberry crumble that will suit all occasions and also various health considerations too. Dilemma - Which Blueberry Crumble do I Make?

If I want create a blueberry crumble for different members of my family I would have to think about what recipe to do very carefully as each family member has different needs. It would be no good just creating a great recipe and hoping for the best. So below I have gone through each family member and have recipes for each one. No doubt either you or your family will come into one or more of these categories.

  1. No Blueberry Crumble for Dad

    Dad prefers traditional simple recipes - unfortunately he doesn't like crumble so he would have to have a blueberry pie!

  2. Mum - Sweet and Sugary

    Blueberry crumble would go down well. No low fat options here and make it sweet - very, very sweet!

  3. A Blueberry Recipe for my Sister or for Me - Low Fat Options

    Sigh, like many people we have to consider our weight. The lower fat options available in some of the dieting books would be the choice. Change the crumble to something with less calories and cut back on the sugar and use a substitute.

  4. My other Sister and Partner - Gluten Free all the Way

    My other sister is gluten intolerant so the recipe would have to be gluten free.

Blueberry Crumble Basic Ingredients - A Fruit Crumble Recipe

Blueberry crumble ingredients vary from crumble to crumble. You add fruit, spices change the topping, use nuts or reduce sugar. So this is just a basic recipe. There are lots of other options available from this lens for you to try too!

This recipe is enough for 4 people.


  • 500g Blueberries, blueberries either fresh or frozen (fresh are better)
  • 25g Porridge Oats
  • 100g Soft Dark Brown Sugar, Substitute sugar and adjust amounts if cutting down fat and calories
  • 45g Butter
  • 50g flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 45 min
Ready in: 55 min
Yields: 4 people

Preparation & Cooking

  1. First heat your oven to Gas mark 5 or 190 degrees Centigrade or 374 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mix together your blueberries and 25g (3/4oz) of your sugar.
  3. Create your crumble by mixing together the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Pop your blueberries into the baking container. Spread the crumble mixture over the top of your blueberries then place into your oven to cook (see temperature above) then remove when cooked and piping hot.

Sometime you just don't want your desserts messed with. These great traditional desserts range from quick and easy to full on cooking. Tasty and filling they are for those who like their desserts how they were meant to be.

Low Fat Blueberry Crumbles

Lower in fat recipes so they are slightly less calories. However eat with caution as they are not as low as I would like. I would substitute the sugar with sweetener and not use nuts etc for an even lower calorie solution.

Healthier Option Blueberry Crumbles

Now I know what it is like for those of us who are weight watching so here are some lower fat options.

Now I watched a programme last night that made it quite clear that just because something says it is healthy does not mean that it is. So while these are lower fat options that are healthier double check your calorie intake or particular diet rules if choosing to make these as while they are the lower fat or healthier options intake still needs to be monitored.

The main issue with making crumbles low fat is the topping and sugar content. Find alternatives to these and you can substitute for any of the recipes. For those of you who follow Slimming World remember to point your fruit if you are cooking it! The recipes here are around 225 to 300 calories so you may have to save up your points.

The problem with substituting sugar is that it changes the consistency of your crumble. One way to limit this would be to use half spoon sugar or to combine half sugar with half sweetener. Depending on your country you may also have access to the Stevia leaf sugar alternative which can also be granular in some cases.

Many of these recipes are already made from the healthier option of oats.

The good thing about making things yourself is that you know what goes into them so there are no hidden surprises!.
