Cheesecake: Pie or Cake

Updated on February 8, 2015

I Think Cheesecake is a Pie

Cheesecake is one of the most delicious, sensual and to die for desserts. How did it get its name cheesecake?

This name is quite confusing. It is not a cake at all. Unless it is the Red Velvet Cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory, then it would be more like a cake. And a big slice of heaven!

Think about the texture of a cheesecake. It is a dessert that should be in a category all of its own. Rich, creamy, sweet, fattening and sinfully delightful are just some of the names that capture this dessert.

Omaha Steaks has more than delicious steaks. They also have mouth watering desserts such as this assortment of individual cheesecakes.

YOUR TURN! - Pie or Cake?

I say Cheesecake is a pie. The reasoning behind this is:

1. Cakes do not have crust.

2. Cake can have a cream filling, but not all of it can be cream filling.

3. Cake is a different texture.

4. A cake has to be baked. Whereas a cheesecake is either baked or non-baked. If a cake isn't baked, then it would be goo!

5. A cake has frosting. Cheesecake doesn't. (For the most part.)

Is cheesecake a pie or cake?

What are your thoughts on this?

Pie of course!

Pie of course!

Pie I guess...although I don't care what anyone calls it so long as I get the biggest piece. :)

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I think it's a pie... But then why do they call it a Cheesecake instead of a Cheesepie?

    • inhousefinancing 5 years ago

I think of it as a pie. But, if the person serving it calls it a cake, I will call it whatever to get a nice, healthy piece. Great lens.

It's a pie, but cake or pie - it is DIVINE!

    • JoshK47 5 years ago

Definitely a pie - I love blowing my friends' minds by mentioning this to them.

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I'm so confused, but it sure seems more like pie to me. And, I love cheesecake, huh!

    • anonymous 5 years ago

I say that it is more of a pie than a cake

Cheesecake is a pie. For all of those 5 reasons! =)

    • mockingbird999 5 years ago

I'm going to say pie because of the crust.

Cake is in the wording, so it is a cake.

I have a fabulous recipe for cheesecake. It involves baking. In fact, the entire process takes longer than a cake or a pie. Resign yourself to spending the better part of a day in the kitchen (which is why I only make it on request or I really want to impress).

Yes, it has a crust, but I also make a from-scratch (as is my cheesecake and crust) topping of either strawberries or blueberries that is drizzled over the top as it's served (not everyone wants toppings on their cheesecake).

Whether you consider this a pie or a cake, baking it from scratch takes the better part of the day.

I prefer it to be called yumminess filled with love!

How Did Cheesecake Get Its Name?

Not really defined, but in ancient Greece, a Greek physician Aegimus, wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes. In 1912, James Kraft invented a form of cream cheese, which is now the most commonly used cheese for cheesecake.

Whatever! If it's cheesecake, it gets recycled to as many people as possible. I know I am not alone. Surely, ba-zillions of people love cheesecake as much I do. :)

I like cheesecake. I do not know what it is though....might be in the category of Jello or Pudding pie, but it is too thick for that. No matter, I love the NY Cheesecake.

Lady Guinevere I would call it pie. Either way it sure is good.
