Cheesecake: Pie or Cake

Updated on February 8, 2015

I Think Cheesecake is a Pie

Cheesecake is one of the most delicious, sensual and to die for desserts. How did it get its name cheesecake?

This name is quite confusing. It is not a cake at all. Unless it is the Red Velvet Cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory, then it would be more like a cake. And a big slice of heaven!

Think about the texture of a cheesecake. It is a dessert that should be in a category all of its own. Rich, creamy, sweet, fattening and sinfully delightful are just some of the names that capture this dessert.

YOUR TURN! - Pie or Cake?

I say Cheesecake is a pie. The reasoning behind this is:

1. Cakes do not have crust.

2. Cake can have a cream filling, but not all of it can be cream filling.

3. Cake is a different texture.

4. A cake has to be baked. Whereas a cheesecake is either baked or non-baked. If a cake isn't baked, then it would be goo!

5. A cake has frosting. Cheesecake doesn't. (For the most part.)

How Did Cheesecake Get Its Name?

Not really defined, but in ancient Greece, a Greek physician Aegimus, wrote a book on the art of making cheesecakes. In 1912, James Kraft invented a form of cream cheese, which is now the most commonly used cheese for cheesecake.
