Some wines, specifically made from pinot noir grapes contain a lot of Resveratrol,( a kind of polyphenol) which is said to have beneficial health attributes. Its mostly present in the skin of the grapes, and is what the grape itself uses to combat or as a self defense mechanism against certain fungi that are bad for grapes.

The actual benefits or the reasons why it works are still being studied.

Any kind of tomato based sauce definitely gets improved with a splash of red wine.

Yep, they say reservatrol is the crucial ingredient giving red wines their special health benefits. Beyond that, alcohol, in moderation, is good for you. It cuts the grease and helps flush out fat. People who drink one or two glasses of red wine daily have, on average, significantly lower levels of "bad" cholesterol than those who don't.
