When I first discovered avocado, I had no idea how to eat it! I didn't know how to tell if it was ripe and I wasn't sure how to open it. I remember buying one up that was too hard and was no where near ready for consumption. I tried to soften it in the microwave. Once I realized my mistake, I put it in the fridge to ripen but it turned brown and went bad. For those who are familiar with avocado, you know how easy it is to peel and eat, but for someone who has never come across it before, it can be a strange experience. Avocados are healthy and delicious, so I made this simple "how-to" to help out those who have never prepared their own avocados, so they know what to do. It's really very simple!

Time required: 1 minute

Difficulty: easy

Cost: $1.00

Materials:

  • Avocado

Tools:

  • Spoon
  • Knife

Instructions:

1. First it's important to make sure that the avocado is ready to eat.

To check your avocado to see if it's ripe, hold it in the palm of your hand and squeeze the fruit with your thumb. If your thumb goes into the avocado very slightly, it's the perfect time to open it. If it's very hard, it is not yet ready and if it's very soft it might be too late.

Take your knife and cut your avocado in half lengthwise. Once you have cut all around the fruit. It should easily twist off into two pieces.

2. Now it is time to remove the pit. You should easily be able to remove the pit by pushing it out with your finger, if it's stuck you can also use your spoon to scoop it out.

Once the nut is discarded, you can remove the fruit. The color should be green, not brown. If there are any bruises get rid of them with your spoon.

If you want to keep the avocado pieces intact, you can remove the peel, by peeling it off. If you are not concerned with how the avocado will look (like for example if you will using it for guacamole), you can simply scoop it out with your spoon.

Turn Avocados into Guacamole!

The most popular way to eat avocados is by making a dish called guacamole. Guacamole is a thick dip/sauce made from smashed avocados. Common ingredients in this dip include garlic, cilantro, tomatoes and lemon juice. The lemon juice is the most important ingredient: it helps prevent oxidation, prevents them from turning brown and it keeps the avocados fresh.

People love eating guacamole because of it's rich and thick texture. It's also incredibly healthy and delicious. It also makes a great snack option for vegetarians and vegans. Guacamole is commonly served alone with tortilla chips and salsa. It's also used to top tacos, sandwiches, chilli and rice dishes, as a dip for vegetables, crackers, shrimp and quesadillas.
