Originally from Northern Louisiana, I now live in the southern part. I have many great country, Cajun, and New Orleans recipes to share.

Heart Healthy Oat Bread

Old-fashioned homemade oat bread is both delicious and good for you. It is low in cholesterol and contains cholesterol lowering oatmeal so this easy to make bread is one that everyone should try.

There are many ways to make oat bread. We've included easy recipes for the basic bread as well as some of the variations and links to bread machine cookbooks, too. Hope you enjoy making and eating this wonderful, healthy bread.

Oat Bread

Oat bread is our favorite homemade bread. It's great for breakfast, lunch, dinner or served with cheese or pesto or herb butter as an appetizer.

Easy Recipes for Healthy Bread

The benefits and high nutritional value of whole oats are well known in the battle against high cholesterol. High fiber diets also have many other health benefits. Our favorite Oat bread recipe includes the addition of nuts (we like walnuts) 15 minutes into the first cycle, which adds to the health benefits and the taste.

Using a Bread Machine

Read all the instructions in the owner's manual of your machine, because bread machines vary.

Add ingredients in the order specified for your machine. Ninety percent of the machines start with the water, but check to make sure.

For best results, make sure all ingredients are at room temperature unless specified otherwise.

Oat Bread

Whole wheat, Sweet or Basic cycle

This recipe is for a Medium loaf. For small and large loaves see the Bread Machine Cookbook, by Donna Rathmell German.

3 Tablespoons sugar (we use raw)

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup oat bran

1/2 cup oats

Add 1/3 cup of chopped nuts 15 minutes into the first cycle or when directed in your bread machine owner's manual.

Old-Fashioned Oat Bread

Recipe is for a regular loaf. For large loaf ingredient amounts see, The All-New Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook by Tom Lacalmita.

1/2 cup water

3/4 cup milk

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter1 1/2 teaspoons salt

3 Tablespoons honey

1/3 cup rolled oats

3 cups bread flour

2 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast

1. All ingredients must be at room temperature. Liquid ingredients should be approximately 80 degrees F. Cut butter into small cubes. Add ingredients in the order specified in your bread machine owner's manual.

2. Select white or basic bread and normal or medium crust.

3. Remove baked loaf from pan at the end of the baking cycle, and cool on a wire rack at least one hour before slicing.

Makes 12 slices. Approximate nutritional analysis per slice: 150 calories, 5 g. protein, 27 g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 3 g fat, 6 mg cholesterol, 45 mg potassium, 275 mg sodium.

Variations: Substitute real maple syrup for the honey. To make a regular loaf replace the honey with 3 tablespoons of real maple syrup.

Add dried black currants or toasted, chopped walnuts, or a combination of the two. 1/2 cup for a regular loaf, 5 minutes before the end of the last kneading cycle.
