Have an Ostrich Burger with Low Fat & Low Cholesterol

Updated on April 8, 2013

Ostrich Burgers - Served at the Chandler Arizona Ostrich Festival

I had no idea that Arizona had an ostrich population or that people ate them until I visited the Chandler Arizona Ostrich Festival.

The ostrich is a strange bird and most sources claim that it is the closest thing to a dinosaur that is living today.

I love eating ostrich festivals and I also love watching them. They are odd birds and do some very strange things. I saw a video once of an ostrich as he pulled off the wig of an unsuspecting woman.

The only caution i can give you is to not get too close with fingers or your face; they have been known to cause damage.

I was able to take photos and a video of the ostrich and wanted to share them in this website. These are all original photos.

Thank you for visiting and have a burger, on me!

The Chandler Arizona Ostrich Festival

The Chandler, Arizona Ostrich Festival is held once a year during March.

The first time I visited, I had not idea what to expect. The festival started as a tribute to the ostrich, which are raised here in Arizona due to the climate. In more recent years, the festival has turned into more of a tourist attraction.

Festival attractions have items that are all things ostrich. They sell ostrich feathers, eggs, eggshells and anything that could be embellished with an ostrich image or ostrich feathers.

The best part, in my opinion, are the numerous locations that sell ostrich burgers and other ostrich-related food.

If you live in Arizona or are just traveling to or through here, it is an event that shouldn't be missed!

The Ostrich and Nutrition

Eating an ostrich burger is an experience you will never forget! It is not only tasty, it is quite healthy.

Ostrich meat, looks very much like red beef. It is ground and made into burgers and you can eat it like any other poultry.

Comparably, it is very low in fat and also cholesterol. It is very high in Omega 3 fatty acids and will not clog your arteries.

It is protein rich and compares to other meats. It can be your protein intake for the day.

In addition to everything else, ostrich meat has a PH level that will not attract salmonella or E-Coli bacteria.

Many grocery stores and most natural grocery stores have ostrich burgers.

They are fairly expensive and run around $10 a pound. The cost is not prohibitive when it comes to your health.

Ostrich does not have the fats so it is necessary to use fat to grill and be sure to use your favorite spices.

@Rosetta Slone: Yes, you are correct. It is almost as red as some other wild game I have eaten but it has a much milder taste. Thank you for visiting!

I've eaten ostrich meat many times and love it. The most surprising thing is you expect it to be white like chicken, but it comes out deep red.
