Sauerkraut Sandwich, The Reuben

Reuben Sandwich

I was born a Midwesterner and when I haven't been home in a while, I start craving the luscious Reuben sauerkraut sandwichs. I'm talking rye bread, corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing, to be precise. I could tear one up right now!

Ok then.

Tear It Up

If I haven't said it before, I am saying it now, I could tear up a Reuben this second. I would barely taste it, I want it so bad. Just the aroma alone . . .

It is time for me to head back to Ohio, land of my birth, home of my family. OMG, now I am getting teary-eyed. But if you loved Reubens the way I love Reubens . . .

Give Me A Reuben

Also I get seriously hungry if I see a Reuben, or even if I think about one. This page has been created to acknowledge and to honor the Reuben.

I'll have a sweet tea with that please.

Cabbage Born

The critical ingredient in a Reuben is delicious sauerkraut. Yes indeed, and sauerkraut is made of pickled cabbage. Grilled rye bread, pastrami or corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, oh yeah! Put a scoop of sauerkraut on that and a dollap of rich dressing. Pickle on the side and some chips.

You may think that you've died and gone to heaven. Yeah, it's that good. That's how you know that you've got yourself a sandwich!

Comfort Is An Art Form

There's no comfort like comfort food! This is the law as I say unto you. Sounds like the Soup Nazi on "Seinfeld".

When I liked this lens, it turned out to be my 1300th lens like, and I got a big 50 points for it. Ain't that nice?

I didn't realize the poll was actually a quiz so I put stuffed cabbage which is my favorite. I do like saurkraut and when I was in Korea I learned to like kimchee, especially the spicy winter kimchee. A very tasty lens, Linda.

I spent a couple years in Germany as a kid and the smell of sauerkraut was overwhelming in the school cafeteria, so I never developed a liking for it. But this looks mighty tasty!

I got the most skimpy, disappointing rueben at a Village Inn in Wesley Chapel, FL. Now I am drooling for a real stacked high delicious ruben. MMMMMMM.

My friend makes the hands down best sauerkraut around. Every fall she make hundreds of quarts of this amazing stuff. I think I will try to talk her into using it to make Reubens next tuesday as we do dinner and a Bible study at her house. Now I only need to find the rest of the fixings as high a quality as I can afford to do justice to her Kraut.

Choucroute was something we mistakenly tried in Alsace, long ago before we were veggie - makes me cringe just thinking of that stuff - stank of pork fat and pork fat ran all over the table. Sauerkraut on its own is a wonderful dish or side dish so perhaps this tear we'll get around to making some from our own lovely cabbages.

No beef, thanks - veggie sauerkraut is fine by me! We've not yet pickled our own, though - something we should do.

Yummmm! Rueben sandwiches! I didn't use to like them (even though I am still a midwesterner) but something changed a few years ago, and I love them now.

Have you even made fresh 1,000 Island Dressing for your Rueben? Oh man! It steps it up a million levels. With fresh french fries and home-baked rye...I think I'm drooling a bit.

I miss many things since we left New York & and an awesome Rueben sandwich is one of them. Loved to be able to grab one on the go (and they were perfect every time) . Now we settle for only having one when we make them. Sure they are still terrific, but it would be nice to be out & to stop for a Reuben for lunch. Now I'm in the mood for one - time to hit the grocery store.

I love Rhubens and the sauerkraut is a must. The only thing I don't care for is that some restaurants don't drain the sauerkraut enough and you end up with a wet sandwich.

I love cabbage but have never really been a fan of the Rueben but my hubby loves them. I will certainly share this with him and enjoyed my visit.
