About Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Welcome to the world of Modern Warfare! In this fourth installment of the widely successful franchise, the game explores new grounds as the story is set in modern times, rather than its previous World War II setting. The game is a break from tired WWII type of gaming and features modern day arsenal and weaponry.

The Story:

The plot takes place in the year 2011, where a radical leader has taken down the president of an unknown country in the Middle East, and an "Ultranationalist" movement starts a civil war in Russia. The conflicts are seen from the perspectives of a U.S. Reconnaissance Marine and a British SAS commando, and are set in multiple locations, including the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Prypiat, Ukraine. The game starts with fundamentals like weapons training and combat, which moves pretty quickly save from the exchange of dialogues. The combat is similar to its predecessors, you fight along side your comrades, firing at enemies and aiding one another. You can evade and protect yourself with various moves like crouching and prone. Each move will depend on your location and will affect your movement, accuracy, and stealth.

The Game play:

When in campaign or single player mode, your view changes from character to character, depending on your location. Each level features objectives to accomplish such as arriving at a checkpoint, eliminate all enemies, defend a specified objective, or plant explosives on enemy territory. After the game and the credits have rolled, an epilogue mission is introduced where a four-man team retrieves a VIP from terrorists who hijack an airliner.

Multiplayer:

Multiplayer mode offers a team match or a death match in various maps. There is a leveling system that allows the player to unlock new weapons, attachments, and camouflage schemes as they gain more and more experience. Kill streaks matter in multiplayer mode: three kills can call on UAV reconnaissance scans; five kills call on an airstrike; and seven kills call on an attack helicopter. The UAV scans the battle field for visible enemies, the airstrike is launched on the player’s chosen enemy shown on the scan, and the helicopter attacks all enemies at will.

A game is finished when the player or team accumulates the appropriate points, the objective is achieved, or if the allotted time expires and the team with the highest number is the winner. When both teams have the same number of points after the given time, a Sudden Death match is activated, where there is no respawning and the player or team has the last man standing or when the team achieves the goal.

Each player’s experience points is determined by their performance in each round or game, when they reach enough points, they can level up during an ongoing game and unlock new weapons, attachments, game play modes, challenges, and perks that he or she can change anytime after a round. Ranks are also given to determine each player’s level. The highest possible level is 55. A level up can grant customizing a player’s personal class, including changing weapons and perks. There are several perks available and more are unlocked during your progress, they include increased bullet penetration or damage, being able to shoot even when you are lying on the ground severely wounded, and decreasing the delay of shooting bullet to bullet by one fourth.

The challenges reward experience points and unlocking of weapon attachments. They include kill streaks with a specific weapon, taking down helicopters, and headshots with specific weapons.

Weapons:

Here are some of the basic weapons featured in the game:

AK-47- In single player mode, this is the primary weapon of all enemies and it can be picked up anywhere during the game. In multiplayer, it can be upgraded with attachments like a Red Dot Sight and a Silencer.

M14- This is a personal favorite. It is a semi-automatic assault rifle with a high damage and better accuracy. The M14 is also an effective weapon because it can kill in two shots or one in the head.

Dragunov- This is a Russian semi-automatic sniper rifle. This is mostly used by the Ultranationalists, Loyalists, and OpFor enemies in single player mode.

Reviews and Reception:

The game received a 94 out of 100 based upon 69 reviews on Metacritic. Awards include Best Action Game from GameCrtics, Action Game of the Year and Console Game of the Year from Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, and Best Shooter from Spike Video Game Awards. As of May 2009, the game has sold over 13 million copies.

There is no doubting that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the best First Person Shooters of the decade. With its detailed storytelling, stunning graphics, and intricate game play, all FPS fans should have played this game by now.
