Becoming a Video Creator; an Intro

A little over a year ago I had an idea, and that idea was to create Videos of myself playing games on my Computer, but being that I know other people are better at these things than I am, I created my channel with a bit of satire in the title and called myself "JN Plays Badly"

After making a few videos I realized just how difficult this process can be, and how hard it can be to keep up with the demand that comes along with it, or to keep the promises you make to do regular updates.

What follows are several of my thoughts on this process, and the result of my own adventure into the world of making YouTube videos for others to watch and enjoy.

I hope that you can use this information if anyone reading this wishes to become a YouTube content creator

The Intro video I made for my Channel

Creating content for my channel; the early stages

One thing that I've struggled with is keeping up with my content.

in the above intro, I talked about having Weekly Updates, and while at first I was able to keep this going, a lack of motivation and a busy personal schedule, made it hard to keep up with this.
I had several videos done in advance which made it easier to do what I wanted, but after these videos were published, I had to actually create content.

my first videos were, in truth, nothing to write home about, as you can see in the next video I included in this Hub.
The first episode sounds a little preachy and is long but not in a good way, it is long because I never found a good stopping point in the video I was making, and I cover a lot of irrelevant information while trying to keep the content interesting.

My idea, at first, was to create custom content and showcase the various activities in the different games, as well as have a little fun with each in the process, but if you watch the video, you'll see that it wasn't that easy.

Keeping the Content relevant

One thing I tried to do when making videos is keep the content relevant, and also try to make content focusing around "Holiday" events that are going on.
In the previous video, i detailed a Limited time collaboration quest in Final Fantasy 14 that allowed you to get special "minions" based on the Game Yo-Kai Watch.

At the same time, in World Of Warcraft, there was a "Holiday" event based around Halloween called Hollows End in which you have to fight and defeat the Headless Horseman, who has been twisted by his own death to believe that the Living are all undead monsters.

The event was a lot of fun and I was able to make several videos of content for it, but they were all short because it was only a single fight we were involved in, and because it is mostly for fun, it was an easy fight.

The downside, as you can see in the video, is that a short length of the time in the video is waiting for the dungeon to actually start, and this could be boring to people watching the video who actually came for the Fight itself.

Making Let's Play videos

After making short content, I decided to upgrade to what are commonly known as Let's Play videos where you do just that, play the game, and upload the content.
Mine are, decent, but also very, "let me read this to you" in the beginning, I later stopped this as it started to get annoying and took extra time, so I changed it to giving a brief summary of the quests I was doing.

In some of these Let's Play videos I actually got lost looking for a quest enemy or a location and wasted a lot of time, which could also make the video seem boring and uneventful to people watching it.

I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me if I wanted to be successful in this, but I was also getting discouraged because of a lack of traffic on my channel, and virtually no comments on any of the videos.

The First of my Let's Play vidoes

The Fall and Rise of JN Plays Badly

With time, content and my own inability to focus, I found this whole YouTube video creation thing to be almost too much like 'work' and i eventually lost all Interest in creating content, I wanted to play the games without wondering what to say to people, what to create, what to go and do.

the last video I uploaded was almost 7 months ago, and even the Patreon account I created, which saw no patrons sign up, was deactivated.

Many of my reasons are reasons I want those of you reading this to avoid if you decide to try making content videos yourself.
Watching other people who make videos, they are enthusiastic about their content, they get excited at things when they happen.
When they do a Let's Play, they don't act like they are reading from a script.
When they are playing a game, they do what they want, but in a way that is pleasing to their audience.

In short, watch my videos and use them as an example of what not to do.
My hope is to someday, when I can focus more and be more confident, resume making content for my channel, but for now I am happy sharing my experiences with you all, in the hope that you can learn something from it.
