Updated on July 27, 2012

In the age of computer games and gaming consoles like the Playstation, board games may seem boring and dated. Yet, they have an element in their play which cannot be replicated via the electronic medium, which is the physical interaction between players.

Departing from the various well known classics like Scrabble and Monopoly, there are a whole world of board games out there which are both entertaining and engaging and involves anything from 2 to 8 players. Some other games even allow for more players to take part. Strategy board games are a popular genre as they not only pitch luck but an element of skill and guile in the game. Gather around, team up and best your friends and family in some of the most popular strategy board games around!

Settlers of Catan

The Settlers of Catan is an award-winning strategy game from Mayfair where players start with an initial settlement and collect resources with the roll of the dice. Deploy, trade or stockpile your resources to build roads, settlements and cities while preventing your opponents from doing so. Contemplate your opponent's strategy while judging the probability of the dice throw while forming your own route to victory.

The setup of the board is variable, hence guranteeing that no two games are the same. There are a variety of ways to attain victory from expansion to trade. The board itself is variable, making each game a little different from the next. Each round of The Settlers of Catan is intended to keep three or four players ages 10 and above engaged for up to 90 minutes.

The original game is so popular that there are several expansion sets that allow you to explore new aspects of the game or play on an expanded board with 6 players. Team up in pairs to discuss strategy. There is even a travel edition for play on the go!

Risk is a classic game of global domination for 3-5 players played out on a world map. There are 42 territories and each player competes to capture all of them to dominate globe.

Every turn, a player would be able to raise a certain number of military units to add to his / her standing army. Conquer continents to be able to gain extra units per turn. Hence, the decision to consolidate or attack your opponent would have to factor in the probability of success, the strategic locations to hold and the roll of the dice.

Carcassonne is a tile laying strategy game. The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters, and in the fields. It is for 2 to 5 players and takes about 60 minutes to play. The rules are simple enough for children to grasp so you can engage your family in an evening of fun.

Carcassonne shares similarities to the Settlers of Catan. Points are gained by creating long roads, building large cities or farming multiple farms. It draws elements of building jigsaw puzzles together with a strategy game of competing for territory. All together, it also has extremely high replayability due to the variable board. Similar to Catan, the popularity of the game spawned many expansion packs for more enjoyment.

Stratego is another classic strategy board game that is still popular today. You start the game with an army of men at your disposal and six bombs. Your mission is to capture your opponent's flag and protect your own. Move with caution and courage. The next piece you attack could be a bomb that would kill your piece. Hence the strategy is how to trick your opponent to step on your bomb while avoiding the same fate. This game is also suitable for young children and it makes for an evening of family fun!
