Carrying as Support League of Legends

Updated on May 22, 2018

Support can be one of the less popular roles in League of Legends, because it revolves less around getting kills and more about helping your team be the best they possibly can be. Good support players do everything in their power to make their teammates stronger and more effective and this is why they are a vital part to any League of Legends team. Some people believe that supports do not have the potential to carry games, and this is completely false. Good support players have a great impact on the game, they just do it in a different way. Keep an open mind in this game and explore all the roles and their values and draw backs. Doing this will make you a much better player.

How Can I Carry as Support?

  • Warding. The wards you place on the map the more your team will be able to set up plays and avoid dying. Helping your team avoid a death is just as good as helping your team get a kill. Always have wards ready to go and pink wards to gain vision control. The more vision you have on the map the more likely you are going to be to win the game. This is your main job as a support and the better you are at warding, the more you are helping your team win the game. This may not be very glamorous, but it is a great way to increase your win rate.
  • Winning Your Lane. The lane is where games are really determined and leads are gained. Good support players help their ranged carries get a lot of farm so they can be scary damage dealers. Winning your lane revolves around good trading in the lane and avoiding dying to jungler ganks. Play champions that allow you to make plays and add value to your team. If you aren't good at a champion, don't play it unless you are okay with losing games. It takes a long time to get good at a champion. Stick to what you know if you want to win games.
  • Peeling your carry in team fights. Your carry champions are very fragile and they can die pretty easily. That is why it is important that you protect these champions and help them stay alive and out put as much damage as possible. Keeping your carries alive will win your team fights and ultimately win you the game. You also have to take into consideration how the game is going and who is carrying the game. Peeling your 0 and 7 carry might not be the best option. Take into account variables and don't use a one size fits all strategy.

There are support players at all ranks, proving that it is possible to get to any rank playing support. Everything in League just boils down to your impact on the game. The more positively you impact your team the more likely you will be to win the game.

Draw Backs of Playing Support

Now support is not all roses all the time. Sometimes playing support can be frustrating because it feels like you do not have a huge impact on the game. This is where the law of averages comes into play. If you are good play, eventually, you will start winning games even if you get unlucky.

  • Less of an impact. I'm not going to lie to you and say support is the best role to carry and win games with. Like anything, you have to be a good at the role you play in order to rank up. Play well and add value to your team, and eventually you will win games.
  • More dependent on team: You have to depend on your team when you play support. You are not going to be able to do enough damage to carry your team, however, you can set your team up for success. Keeping your carry alive through a team fight may not seem like a big deal, but it can help them do the damage that is going to sway the fight in your favor.
  • Can be boring at times: Support can get boring. It is not fun to play a game where your carries are playing badly and you feel like you can't do enough to win the game. It can be a lot more fun to be a fed Jax 1v5 the entire enemy team and let's face it, support will never get to this point.

Have fun with it

Honestly, the game will be a lot more enjoyable and you will get a lot more out of it by focusing on having fun rather than ranking up. I know this sounds dumb for those of us trying to rank up, but the less seriously you take the game, the better you do in some cases. It is easy to rage and blame your team, especially when you are playing support because it can feel like you are powerless. The best thing you can do is focus on what you can control and do your best to win every game. Some games will be fun and some games will suck. That is just the nature of League.
