D&D Campaign Creation - Step 1
Writing a Campaign
To start writing a campaign, you need 2 things: imagination and dedication.
The first thing I always do for my campaign is decide on a theme of the game: fantasy, modern, steampunk or something else? For a first campaign I recommend fantasy as the D&D official systems are based around this which makes them the most supported and easiest to make.
When you start your writing you should first think of a plot that you can follow to aid your writing. You should include a few different options in your campaign though so that the party have a bit more freedom than just a linear mission.
The next step is to write a background that led the world to be how it is at the start of your campaign. I usually describe a grim setting that is the setting of the end of the campaign, then use some form of juxtaposition to describe a tavern for the characters to meet and find their quest.
Now, for the writing of the background you'll need a few things that I'll list below
Things you'll need to do for the Background
- Explain how long ago your description begins and where it is
- Explain what was happening at the time that your description begins
- Explain how the world has changed since then
- Use a biased tone to make the party sympathetic to the side that their characters shall be fighting alongside
Stay tuned for the second installment in this series and, in the meantime, you can take the time to read my recommended book about descriptive writing.
