DayZ has become so popular, it has put Arma 2 in the top ten selling games on Steam for over a month now.

What do I need?

In order to play DayZ, you’ll need to own a copy of Arma 2: Combined Operations, which includes Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead. You’ll need to download the DayZ mod files as well, and have the Arma 2 BETA patch installed. So:

  • Arma 2 Combined Operations
  • DayZ mod files
  • Arma 2 BETA patch

How do I install DayZ?

Steam

There are a number of different ways to install DayZ depending on how you have Arma 2: CO installed. If you have Arma 2: CO on Steam, this is how to install DayZ:

Download the Arma 2 Beta Patch.

Go to the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead directory, and right click on the "_runA2CO_beta.cmd" file, and then select edit. Search for :run near the end of the file. Add ‘;@dayz’ without quotes to ‘-mod=%_ARMA2PATH%;EXPNASION;ca’.

You can then run ‘_runA2CO-beta.cmd’ to play the game (install the DayZ mod files below first.)

Download the DayZ Mod Files.

Make a folder named @DayZ in the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead directory (C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common/Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead)

Inside the @DayZ folder, create a new folder called ‘Addons’ (C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common/Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead/@Addons)

Unpack the mod files in the Addons folder, and then start the game as you would with the Arma 2 Beta Patch (see above)

If you installed the mod correctly, you should see @dayz under the Arma 2 on the right side of the menu screen.

Retail

To install DayZ on a retail copy of Arma 2, it’s a little simpler.

Download the Arma 2 BETA patch and install it.

Go to the Arma2:OA directory and right click on the shortcut ‘launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch’. Add ‘-mod=@dayz’ without quotes to the target line.

Run the ‘Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch’ file. (Install the DayZ files as detailed below first though)

Download the DayZ mod files.

Make a folder named @DayZ in your Arma2 folder.

Inside that folder, create another folder called ‘Addons’

Unpack the DayZ mod files in the Addons folder,

Start the game as you would with the Arma 2 beta patch.
