Dragon Fantasy Book I Walkthrough, Part Thirteen: Tower of Trials

With a full party under his belt and an adventure in the making, Anders is ready to head to the Cavern of Ice and have some questions answered… or maybe not. The young man is still not quite prepared for that particular trial, being a fresh-out-of-the-castle adventurer. Instead, he must head out to the Tower of Trials and undergo intense training which will prepare him for the worst. Trials ahoy!

(Note: Despite the temptation of visiting a heretofore unknown and optional section, the Tower of Trials isn't that special. A few of the items on the ground floor will let you save some money, and there's a decent sword for Anders partway up. Nevertheless, if you feel pressed for time, you don't need to complete this section. A lot of the stuff found here can be purchased elsewhere with less hassle, and you'll earn more experience back on the mainland anyway.)

Hop onto the southern boat at Wester's pier and enjoy the quick trip to a small, nearby island. When you enter the Tower you'll be facing a mixture of enemies old and new, none of them anything you can't handle:

  • Mr. Stingee. This little guy is a lot weaker than he looks, especially if you have a full team of four. The only thing to worry about is getting poisoned, and this is rare. Squash 'im.

There are four staircases on the ground floor of the Tower of Trials. Only one of them takes you where you need to go to get up the tower.

  • The southwest stairs lead to a dead end. Don't bother.
  • The northwest stairs take you to an Iron Helmet, and naught else.
  • The southeast stairs lead to two chests containing a Hammer and an Iron Shield.
  • The northeast stairs lead onward through the tower.

Ascend to the second floor, then to the third. Ignore the next set of stairs you see and go up the second, grabbing the Brimmed Hat from the chest before ascending. These lead to a descending set of staircases, at the bottom of which is a Flame Rapier for Anders. This is the main reason to come to the Tower of trials, even though the Flame Rapier isn't exactly tearing up the attack department. Head back the way you came with sword in hand.

Go up the stairs you ignored earlier. These lead to the roof. On the northwest corner of the roof is a solitary chest, this containing Leather Armor. Nothing fancy, but you gained some levels on the way up.

That's pretty much it for the Tower of Trials, unless you feel up to grinding here. Descend through the Tower and make your way back to the ship to return to Wester. From here you can spend time levelling up your characters outside Wester (the best place to do it so far, frankly) or simply make tracks to the Cavern of Ice, your obligatory next destination. Make sure you have a nap at the inn after the visit to the Tower of Trials, as you'll need every HP and MP to survive the experience.
