Elder Scrolls Skyrim Dawnguard: How to Get Auriel's Bow Achievement

Updated on July 14, 2012

Auriel's bow is a special type of a bow that you get for completing the Skyrim Dawnguard mission "Touching the Sky." In order to get the Auriel's bow achievement you must use it's special power. After completing the main missions for the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC, Serana will make special Elven Arrows for you. Serana will use her blood and turn your Elven Arrows into "Blood Cursed Elven Arrows."

Blood Cursed Elven Arrows are capable of blocking out the sun in Skyrim when using Auriel's bow! Blocking out the sun means that if you are a vampire, you will not have to suffer the negative effects from the sun! You can not recover health, stamina, and magic when out in the sun if you are a vampire in Elder Scrolls Skyrim. However, if you shoot a Blood Cursed Elven Arrow at the sun in Skyrim, a dark cloud will mask the sun and the world of Skyrim will become darker! As ridiculous as it sounds, aiming at the sun with Auriel's bow and shooting the Blood Cursed Elven Arrow will in fact block out the sun.

Summary of how to get the Auriels Bow Achievement (Blocking out Skyrim's sun)

  • Need Auriel's Bow which you get at the end of the "Touching the Sky" Dawnguard mission
  • Need Elven Arrows. These can be bought from Blacksmiths in Skyrim or can be found in Skyrim
  • Give the Elven Arrows to Serana (vampire follower). Note she will only turn them into Blood Cursed Elven Arrows after completing all the main Dawnguard missions (after final boss fight)
  • Find the Sun in Skyrim and shoot it using Auriel's Bow (ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED)

Blocking out the sun with Auriel's bow is not permanent in Skyrim

When you block out the sun with Auriel's bow, the sun will be blocked for an entire day in Skyrim. It will not be blocked permanently. The sun will be back in Skyrim's sky the next day, although you can block it out again.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the sun when the clouds are out, however. For some reason vampires are still affected by the sun even if the clouds are out. So it may be difficult to block out the sun if you can not find the sun due to visibility.

I think it's rather silly that vampires are still affected by the sun when the clouds are blocking it! The benefit of blocking out the sun with Auriel's bow is so you will not be hurt by the sun if you are a vampire.

If anyone can figure out how to locate the sun when the clouds are out in Skyrim, leave a comment below. As far as I know, you must shoot the arrows directly at the sun, otherwise, nothing will happen.
