Elder Scrolls Skyrim: How to Get Breezehome House for Free (or other houses)

Updated on July 17, 2012

In Elder Scrolls Skyrim, there are several houses that you can purchase. One of the cheapest homes that you can purchase is called Breezehome. Breezhome is a small house that you can buy after becoming the Thane of Whiterun. Once you have become the Thane during Skyrim's main quest, the Jarl of Whiterun will allow you to buy property in the city. You must speak to the steward named Preventus Avenicci in the Dragonreach building in Whiterun if you wish to buy the house.

Breezehome house costs 5000 gold, however, it is possible to get it free. You must have the gold to initially buy it, but you can get your gold back, basically getting the home for free.

Wait until the night hours until Preventus Avenicci is sleeping. You must talk to him about buying Breezehome when he is sleeping because he is next to a wardrobe. He will be in the quarters upstairs in Dragonreach.

Get Breezhome for Free in Skyrim

Wake Preventus up and say you'd like to purchase a house in the city. Then say you'll take it, BUT immediately back out of the conversation before he takes your gold! Hurry and click the wardrobe nearby and go into your inventory and store your gold coin inside. Then back out and you should receive the key to your house. Check back in the wardrobe and take your gold back.

Basically what you are doing is saying that you wish to buy the house, but you store the money in something before he takes the gold. You'll still get the key to the home without spending any coin!

Tips for Getting a Free House in Skyrim (Breezehome but works for others too)

  • Save your game before trying this method just in case you mess up
  • You must back out of the conversation very fast once you accept to buy the house, otherwise he'll take your gold!
  • Make sure your standing very close to the wardrobe (or other storage unit) so you can store your gold. You have limited time.
  • Once you have the key make sure that you are able to enter the home and get your gold back from the place you stored it in.
  • This method works if you want to buy other houses in Skyrim too. Just make sure you are standing near a storage unit when you ask the person about buying a home.

Neat trick but, that's kind of exploiting a bug no? I suppose as a Rogue Assassin, this wouldn't be beyond the scope of my role playing :)
