Electric Remote Control Boats

Updated on October 15, 2014

Choosing an Electric Remote Control Boat

Electric remote control boats are a firm favourite for RC hobbyists and they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Like with many other RC hobbies there are two grades for electric remote control boats, the toy grade and the kit grade. Both have advantages and disadvantages and you should consider what you want to get out of your new hobby before committing to a purchase. Here are some of the things to consider when buying your first boat:

Electric remote control boats are fast. Yet different models will have different speeds. Look at the maximum speed of a boat and consider the area of water you are using. Too fast in too small an area will result in frequent bumping off the sides and damage to your boat.

Size of the Boat

The size of electric remote control boats will largely determine the turning circle you have to employ to change direction. Have a boat that is too big for your water area and it can only go in a straight line and have to be turned manually.

Battery Life

Kit boats generally last at most 20 minutes before they need to be recharged. This is because they are more powerful than their toy grade counterparts which can last up to 45 minutes. But a toy grade doesn’t look as prestigious as kit grade.

RC boats come in many designs. You can purchase either a civilian looking craft or a military looking craft and both versions have a huge variety of models too. Military looking models tend to be longer and therefore have a larger turning circle, but can also look more impressive on the water.

There is a huge list of electric remote control boats on Amazon to choose from. If you know what you want to gain from the hobby then you know what you are looking for. Here is a list of six electric remote control boats from Amazon.

K-Marine 7009 Electric RC Boat

This 13.5 inch long boat looks very much like a standard speedboat and due to its size is suitable for most water environments. Its top speed is about 15 miles per hour which is fairly controllable for a beginner and for when you aren’t racing over a lake you can display the boat in the included display stand. The remote controller has three channels in which to control the model, allowing more than one person to control a model at the same time. This boat has been given good praise online with 4 five star reviews.

28" Blazingly Fast Victory EP Racing

This is a larger boat and should only be used in larger bodies of water. This model is powered by the triple 550 type racing motor that gives it an excellent burst of speed over the water. This boat has a maximum about of play time of about 15 minutes as it travels at speeds topping about twenty miles per hour. This boat has received 45 five star reviews and 30 four star reviews which gives it a great rating on Amazon.

RC SYMA 28" Racing Boat

This model is scaled at 1/20 and measures 28 inches in length. The model is powered by the commanding 380 racing motor giving a good source of power. It has a vector-push design that makes it easy to control at distances up to 300 feet, which is great for beginners. Its running time is up to twenty minutes and can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. Online reviews are fairly positive with 34 four and five star reviews.

MX Championship Super Lightning Electric RC Speed Boat

This ready to run (RTR) speedboat is a fairly small being only 8.5 inches long, giving it a small turning circle, great when you have limited space for your boat. This motor boat is more suitable for the younger generation or those who might want to buy a smaller boat for limited space or a trial to see if they enjoy the hobby.

HT-2879 Destroyer War Ship

For those hobbyists that wish to experience the joy of RC and have a military feel to it this 31 inch boat might be something that you would consider. This model comes with a display stand so you can show it off to your friends and family when it is not in use. Slower than some other boats with a top speed of only ten miles per hour and with a rather large turning circle due to its size this boat also suffers from a small operating range of just 60 feet. Yet with its appeasing looks including tower lights this model has some good reviews with two thirds of reviews giving this a four or five star rating.

Challenger Warship Aircraft Carrier

This slightly smaller military model RC boat is 30 inches in length. The detail on the craft is beautiful as it comes complete with little aircraft and helicopters adorning the deck of this model aircraft carrier. Again its speed and range is poor compared to some of the racing boats mentioned above but for those who want a military look to their hobby.
