Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Units Guide
Unit tiers
Like most gatcha games, the units you can summon in Brave Exvius come in different levels of rarity, which is used to determine if one unit is generally better than the other (this is a rule of thumb, there are many exceptions).
Regarding this, units have two types of rarity (or star rating):
- their base star rating: how many stars the unit has when summoned, can range from one to five stars
- their maximum star rating: how many stars the unit can get to by being upgraded through the process called unit awakening detailed below; can range from two to six stars
Given the above, base 5 star units are the most rare and most powerful (generally speaking) while base 4 star units are still pretty good and worth investing in; base 3 star units are sometimes good and anything below is usually not worth leveling up or enhancing.
Also worth noting that usually a base 5 star unit will be better than a 4 star unit that's been awakened (upgraded) to 5 stars, and a base 5 star unit awakened to 6 stars will be better than a 4 star unit awakened to 6 stars. That is because base 5 star units have better all around stats and passive skills in general.
Unit awakening
As mentioned above, in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius unit awakening is the process of upgrading a unit from one star rating to the next (for example from 4 stars to 5 stars). In order for this to be available for a specific unit a few conditions must be met:
- it has to be at the maximum level for its current star rating (so basically it is impossible for that unit to gain any more exp until awakened)
- it has to still be able to be upgraded to a higher tier (3 star units can sometimes be upgraded only up to 5 stars, other times to 6 stars; while 4 and 5 star units can be awakened up to 6 stars)
- the player needs to have the required materials (resources) to upgrade the unit; this differes on a case by case basis and the required materials will be shown when attempting to awaken the unit from the unit awakening menu
So if you go into the unit awakening menu and your favorite unit is greyed out it probably means one of the conditions above is not being met.
Once a unit gets awakened to the next tier, its maximum stats will increase but it will start again at level 1. However it will only actually achieve those maximum stats once it gets leveled up to the maximum level for the tier again. Only then will it be allowed to be awakened another time. So be careful if you rely on that unit sometimes it's better to hold off awakening it.
Unit enhancement
In Final Fantasy Brave Exvius unit enhancement is the process of improving a units base stats or level (through gaining experience).
Leveling up units in FFBE
Your summoned units can gain levels in this game by gaining experience points, which can happen in two ways:
- The units in a party are awarded some experience points at the end of a story mission, vortex dungeon etc. The experience in this case is shared between them, so the fewer units you have in a party, the more experience each one gets. If a unit is already at maximum level the exp it would get is wasted.
- The unit gets enhanced using other units (by merging those units with our own). Specifically for gaining exp points, we would merge different type of Cactuar units with the one we want to level up.
You can also merge units amongst themselves but this is not recommended until you learn the value of those units.
Merging units / cactuars costs Gil, the cost depending on the level and rarity of the unit.
Leveling up a unit in FF:BE will improve its base stats with each level requiring more experience than the previous one. Higher tier units also require more experience than lower tier ones. Finally, story units like Laswell or Rain require less exp than non story units.
Improving unit stats in Brave Exvius
Besides leveling up, the other way to improve the stats of a unit is to enhance them using stat pots (like attack pots, HP pots, MP pots etc.). These stat pots still show up as other units, the same as cactuars, but are pretty rare so you are better off saving them to improve a base high rarity summoned unit. You can only increase base stats using pots to a certain maximum that depends on each unit as well as their rarity, with, again, 5 star base units being the ones who can get the most benefit from these pots.
Unit ability awakening
The final way of improving a summoned unit in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is by improving the actual skills of the units. This process requires a lot of Gil as well as special resources that take a lot of time to accumulate and which are only used for this purpose. This will be covered in a future stand alone guide.
