Step 1: Gather your materials
You will need:
- Yarn
- A crochet hook
Step 2: Card the yarn through your fingers
Hold your hand out with your fingers extended like you are going to shake a hand. With your other hand, you will card the yarn through your fingers from bottom (pinky) to top in an over under over under fashion.
Step 3: Form your first loop
Next, you will form a loop with the yarn, that you will then grasp with your middle finger and thumb. This is where you will first insert your hook.
Step 4: Beginning chain
Bring your hook in front of and underneath the length of yarn between your index finger and middle/thumb. I like to think of that area as my working area when I am making a chain. The rest of the fingers that you have carded your yarn through serve to control the tension of your yarn. Be sure that the yarn is flowing freely through your fingers. Turn your hook a little bit towards yourself to make it easier to pull that new loop through the loop that you are holding with your middle/thumb combo.
Step 5: Repeat step 4
Keep repeating step 4 until your chain is the desired length, taking care to pay attention to the tension of your yarn to ensure that your chains are a uniform size. As your chain gets longer, you will want to move your middle/thumb pincher closer to your hook to work comfortably. I like to keep my index finger pointed high so I can see my "work area" more clearly.
