Updated on August 29, 2020

I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994 and have won a few draft tournaments in MTGO and MTG Arena.

Dissension has some quality rares that have mechanics such as Forecast, Hellbent, and Graft. These mechanics enhance your arsenal and give you more gameplay options.

Infernal Tutor

Infernal Tutor is a black sorcery that costs one colorless and one black mana.

Reveal a card from your hand. Search your library for a card with the same name as that card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

Hellbent — If you have no cards in hand, instead search your library for a card, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

Infernal Tutor is initially a limited tutor but with hellbent, becomes a Demonic Tutor.

Psychic Possession

Psychic Possession is a blue enchantment that costs two colorless and two blue mana.

Enchant opponent

Skip your draw step.

Whenever enchanted opponent draws a card, you may draw a card.

This card is a decent sideboard against decks that draw a lot of cards as you can go along for the ride.

Cytoplast Root-Kin

Cytoplast Root-Kin is a green creature that costs two colorless and two green mana.

It has zero power and zero toughness.

Graft Four (This creature enters the battlefield with four plus one power and plus one toughness counters on it. Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you may move a plus one power and plus one toughness counter from this creature onto it.)

When Cytoplast Root-Kin enters the battlefield, put a plus one power and plus one toughness counter on each other creature you control with a plus one power and plus one toughness counter on it.

Pay two colorless mana: Move a plus one power and plus one toughness counter from target creature you control onto Cytoplast Root-Kin.

Four mana for a four power and four toughness creature is not bad but it becomes better since you are adding a plus one power and plus one toughness counter on each other creature you control.

Protean Hulk

Protean Hulk is a green creature that costs five colorless and two green mana.

It has six power and six toughness.

When Protean Hulk dies, search your library for any number of creature cards with total converted mana cost six or less and put them onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library.

This is an annoying creature as when you get rid of it, it spawns more creatures. You can easily turn a dead Protean Hulk into two Steel Leaf Champions or three Barkhide Trolls.

Demonfire

Demonfire is a red sorcery that costs X colorless and one red mana.

Demonfire deals X damage to any target. If a creature dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead.

Hellbent — If you have no cards in hand, this spell can’t be countered and the damage can’t be prevented.

Demonfire is a nice finisher as at the end of games, you have enough mana to fuel it. If you have no other cards in hand, Demonfire becomes uncounterable.

Proclamation of Rebirth

Proclamation of Rebirth is a white sorcery that costs two colorless and one white mana.

Return up to three target creature cards with converted mana cost 1 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Forecast — five colorless and one white mana, Reveal Proclamation of Rebirth from your hand: Return target creature card with converted mana cost 1 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. (Activate this ability only during your upkeep and only once each turn.)

This card is useful in lifegain decks as it can resurrect Serra Ascendant and Soul Warden.

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is a white and blue creature that costs two colorless, one white and one blue mana.

It has two power and three toughness.

White spells you cast cost one colorless mana less to cast.

Blue spells you cast cost one colorless mana less to cast.

Spells your opponents cast cost one colorless mana more to cast.

Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is a nice card to stifle your opponent as it costs less for you to cast your countermagic while it costs him one more mana to cast his spells.

Dovescape

Dovescape is a white and blue enchantment that costs three colorless and three white and / or one blue mana.

Whenever a player casts a noncreature spell, counter that spell. That player creates X one power and one toughness white and blue Bird creature tokens with flying, where X is the spell’s converted mana cost.

You can combine Dovescape with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite so your opponent gets his non creature cards countered and the creatures generated by Dovescape do not last. You can add Godhead of Awe so that other creatures of your opponent are a mere one power and one toughness and would wilt under Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.

Pride of the Clouds

Pride of the Clouds is a white and blue creature that costs one white and one blue mana.

It has one power and one toughness.

Flying

Pride of the Clouds gets plus one power and plus one toughness for each other creature with flying on the battlefield.

Forecast — Pay two cololess, one white and one blue mana, Reveal Pride of the Clouds from your hand: Create a one power and one toughness white and blue Bird creature token with flying. (Activate this ability only during your upkeep and only once each turn.)

Pride of the Clouds is a nice addition to white and blue flying decks. It not only produces an army of fliers but also grows larger if you have more fliers.

Windreaver

Windreaver is a white and blue creature that costs three colorless, one white and one blue mana.

It has one power and three toughness.

Flying

Pay one white mana: Windreaver gains vigilance until end of turn.

Pay one white mana: Windreaver gets plus zero power and plus one toughness until end of turn.

Pay one blue mana: Switch Windreaver’s power and toughness until end of turn.

Pay one blue mana: Return Windreaver to its owner’s hand.

Windreaver is an excellent finisher as you can pump it to increase its damage output and it also has flying to avoid any potential defenders.

Lyzolda, the Blood Witch

Lyzolda, the Blood Witch is a black and red creature that costs one colorless, one black and one red mana.

It has three power and one toughness.

Pay two colorless mana, , Sacrifice a creature: Lyzolda, the Blood Witch deals two damage to any target if the sacrificed creature was red. Draw a card if the sacrificed creature was black.

Lyzolda, the Blood Witch can be used as a sacrifice outlet for recurring creatures. You can even add cards like Blood Artists to make the effect more painful for your opponent.

Avatar of Discord

Avatar of Discord is a black and red creature that costs three black and / or red mana.

It has five power and three toughness.

Flying

When Avatar of Discord enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you discard two cards.

This card is a good value for a mere three mana. It also helps you get to your Hellbent threshhold for your other cards as it forces you to discard two cards.

Dread Slag

Dread Slag is a black and red creature that costs three colorless and one black and one red mana.

It has nine power and nine toughness.

Trample

Dread Slag gets minus four power and minus four toughness for each card in your hand.

With one card in your hand, this is still a decent five power and five toughness creature with trample.

With zero cards in your hand, this is a huge nine power and nine toughness creature with trample.

Rain of Gore

Rain of Gore is a black and red enchantment that costs one black and one red mana.

If a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life, that player loses that much life instead.

This card is an excellent sideboard against lifegain decks as it screws around with their main strategy.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary is a green and blue creature that costs three colorless, one green and one blue mana.

It has two power and two toughness.

Whenever you cast a green creature spell, you may search your library for a creature card and reveal it. If you do, shuffle your library and put that card on top of it.

Whenever you cast a blue creature spell, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a creature card, put that card into your hand.

Momir essentially functions like a Worldly Tutor but with the ability to be able to draw cards placed on top of your library.

Biomantic Mastery

Biomantic Mastery is a green and blue sorcery that costs four colorless and three green and / or blue mana.

Draw a card for each creature target player controls, then draw a card for each creature another target player controls.

This card can easily refill your hand as you get to draw cards based on the creature count for two players.

Simic Sky Swallower

Simic Sky Swallower is a green and blue creature that costs five colorless, one green and one blue mana.

It has six power and six toughness.

Flying, Trample, Shroud.

Simic Sky Swallower is a good finisher for Simic as it is hard to get rid of and can be protected with countermagic.

Voidslime

Voidslime is a green and blue instant that costs one green and two blue mana.

Counter target spell, activated ability, or triggered ability. (Mana abilities can’t be targeted.)

This is an excellent counterspell for Simic as it even targets activated abilities.

Hallowed Fountain

Hallowed Fountain is a land that is both a Plains and an Island.

It can produce either white or blue mana.

You can choose to pay two life or Hallowed Fountain comes into play tapped.

Shock Lands are the modern version of the classic Dual Lands albeit with a two life or comes into play tapped penalty.

Blood Crypt

Blood Crypt is a land that is both a Swamp and a Mountain.

It can produce either black or red mana.

You can choose to pay two life or Blood Crypt comes into play tapped.

It can produce either green or blue mana.

You can choose to pay two life or Breeding Pool comes into play tapped.

Shock Lands are the modern version of the classic Dual Lands albeit with a two life or comes into play tapped penalty.

Pillar of the Paruns

Pillar of the Paruns is a nonbasic land.

Add one mana of any color. Spend this mana only to cast a multicolored spell.

This land is perfect for decks that have many multicolored spells as it fits in seamlessly.
