Minecraft Durability Guide

Updated on September 4, 2011

All of the tools and armor used in Minecraft have a set durability, and after prolonged use will break and no longer be usable. However, in the game it is hard to discern how many blocks that tools can be used on before they can break, and how much damage armor can take before becoming useless, as the durability of each is only a green bar underneath each item's thumbnail. This guide will answer your questions to how many uses and how much damage your items and armor can take before breaking.

The durability of tools is calculated based on the material that the tool is made of, giving a total amount of uses that the tool can perform before it breaks. Using a tool to perform the task it is designed to perform counts as one use; for example, cutting trees with an axe, or digging with a shovel. Using a tool for a use it is not designed for counts as two uses; digging with an axe or chopping down trees with a hoe. The same goes for swords: using a sword to do anything but hit a monster counts as two uses, while hitting a monster with any other tool counts as two uses.

Armor durability is determined differently from item durability. Since armor isn't actively used, the durability is calculated based on the number of half hearts of damage it can sustain. After taking that amount of damage, the armor will then break and offer no more protection.

There are a few different miscellaneous items in the game that also have durability. Using these items is just like using a tool or sword; one use for the action it was intended to do, and two for any other actions.
