Online Games Addiction Effects

Updated on August 6, 2016

This online games addiction article include discussion related to the negative effects or disadvantages of online internet gaming addiction. This includes psychological effects like unwanted stress.

I love playing the free online games including online multiplayer card games and word games that are so much of fun. I have never played the casino games that need cash investment, but I always played the simple online games that are free to use. Even though they are free and fun to play, this love for games comes with some disadvantages unfortunately.

While I still love playing the games, I am very much aware of the negative part of playing the games for hours. I think I have to share what I have learned from my experiences, which may be useful to someone.

Today, I am not addicted to playing the games anymore. Years back, there was a time when I would spend hours in front of the computer simply playing the games. I mostly played word games and my favourite game was the Word Racer from Yahoo. The game is free to play, and it just gives you some score after competing with multiple online players.

Since I had no access to computer during the working days while I was studying in the college, it was on weekends that I played this game for hours. I played these games mostly during the night hours, because basically I am a person who sleeps late. While playing the word games actually helped to improve my vocabulary, this tendency to play the game for hours had so many negative consequences, about which I will explain here.

Precious hours wasted in front of the computer

For me, the most negative thing was the number of hours I simply wasted playing the games. I surely enjoyed the games, but I was not in control of the time I was spending in front of the computer. I was already a late sleeper, but this habit of playing online games made me sit in front of the computer till next day morning without sleep. When I see that it is morning, I would stop playing, and go to sleep.

A most noticeable consequence was the gradual development of dark circles around my eyes. But what I consider the most negative consequence was the considerable amount of time I wasted unnecessarily. If I was doing something productive, this was okay. But there was nothing productive in playing the games continuously for hours.

The unnecessary stress

My obsession with playing games in the late night actually did put a lot of unnecessary strain and stress, since I had to travel to the college on Monday mornings. I had to start from home at around 6:00 AM in the morning, which means I travelled without sleeping. The lack of sleep, and the stress of travelling, together made me unable to listen to the college classes on Mondays.

While you can definitely enjoy the time playing the games, I believe you will regret the precious time wasted, unless you have a lot of free time. The wasted time, which you were supposed to use for other top priorities like work or studies, will put stress on you if you haven't already done your job.

Luckily, I overcame the addiction towards online games over time. As I grew out of the habit naturally and with the help of some rules that I set myself, it saved a lot of time for me. Actually it still saves a lot of time in my life. However, I still have the love for online games, so I play the games occasionally when I have time, even though it is only for few minutes.

The wasted efforts and hard work

When I started thinking about working from home and making an income online, I also tried some sites that have some good games that entertain you.I didn't invest any cash to play games, but I lost my hard earned points for playing games. It was a real waste of time and effort. As you can understand, the hard earned points had the potential to earn me some money. But the momentary temptation in me to play the games, easily wasted the points in few minutes of time, that I earned over time. So you can see how it was a big waste of time and effort.

There are far more negative consequences and disadvantages if you are addicted to playing games, whether they are free online games, or the casino games that need money for gambling, or the video games that you purchase and play at the comfort of your home.

If you are into gambling and invest money to play casino games and other online games, it is much more clear that the main disadvantage is the amount of money that is already lost and the amount of money that may be lost in your near future. This can bring debts which you may not be able to pay back and it has the potential to bring negative situations to your life. It may even affect your behaviour and result in other situations which can also affect your social life. It is proven that those addicted to playing games tend to have an irritable nature sometimes, as a result of the negative consequences of lost games.

The serious addiction to games can affect your financial security, relationships and also social life. While you may gain some good money when you gamble and play, the serious addiction will most probably lead to negative situations both financially and socially.

If you are into video games, other than the negative effect of spending hours in front of the games, there is also the problem of getting involved in violent games, which may not be good. While those who make the games may argue that they are just games and they should be taken in that way, we can see that the video games are mostly played by kids. As parents, I think we have the responsibility to make sure our kids are not engaging too much in violent video games, which can affect them in a negative way.

While staying away from the games may not be an option, I think having control over our time and the money that is spent over the games is very much essential. Playing games is supposed to be fun and bring relaxation to our mind and life, so I think we should not let them take control of our lives.

I have written this hub based on my personal experience with playing online games and the negative consequences I had experienced. If you want to share anymore disadvantages with regards to playing games, feel free to share them in the comment section!

Hi ologsinquito, thanks so much for reading. It is always fun to spend some time for the games, if we have the control over it.

I agree these games can be very addictive. I never play the casino version, but just the free online games, on Sundays sometimes, when I'm not working.

Interesting and informative. Too many hours in front of the computer can make one most unsociable. Unfortunately life has become just that for many individuals.
