Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is an action, adventure and puzzle game set in ancient Egypt.

In the game, you play as Sphinx (a half human, half Sphinx demi-god) and also as the Cursed Mummy (Prince Tutankhamen). The duo battle monsters and solve puzzles in a mission to take down Set (an evil god in monster form) who’s plan is to take Egypt for himself.

Development and Releases

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy was developed by Eurocom and distributed by THQ in 2003 for GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. In 2004, a mobile game was released. And in 2017, a remastered version of the game was released for Windows, Mac and Linux by Swyter.

Game Objectives

The first objective is to retrieve the Blade of Osiris from the Castle of Uruk. Second, you must collect all the Canopic Vases so the Cursed Mummy can turn back into his living self: Prince Tutankhamen. Third, you must collect sacred crowns to appease the god Anubis and weaken the ray that protects the Castle of Uruk. Lastly, you must impair Set so that Anubis can merge with him to become the sun-god known as Ra. With good and evil balanced, peace can return to Egypt.

Game Qualities

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy boasts beautiful environments, a playful character design and an addictive soundtrack that features melodies from the ancient Egyptian era. Overall, the game is challenging, but not impossible.

Reception Over the Years

Sadly, the original release of the game in 2003 was not a good one and did not do well in sales, with the mobile release performing even worse.

Although it did not do well commercially during its initial release, it has gained a cult-following over the years with many rushing to purchase the game when it was released to desktop in November 2017. Currently, the game has a 10 out of 10 rating on the Steam website.

If you enjoy action, adventure, puzzle games or a mix of all three, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Available for desktop on Steam.
