Updated on February 25, 2013

What Is Family Game Night?

Family game night is a scheduled night each week when your family gets together to play board games together. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with the family. It gives you a chance to interact with each other and share good times. Families that play together stay together.

Children grow up so fast and before you know it they're out the door doing their own thing. Give yourself more time with your children before childhood slips away. Make family game night a tradition in your home. You will make wonderful family memories.

Family Game Night Games

Our family has had family game nights for years. We all like many types of board games and card games. It is a fun time to get together once a week to play games and just hang out as a family. I am recommending our top ten games for your family game night.

Family Game Night: Monopoly

The classic board game Monopoly is manufactured by Parker Brothers. Monopoly first came out in 1934 and has been popular since then.

The original Monopoly is based on the city of Atlanctic City, New Jersey. Players get to buy and sell property, pay fees, go to jail and build hotels in the quest to win with the most money.

Family Game Night: Scrabble

Scrabble is a great game where you make up words out of tiles. Each player gets seven tiles and make words that connect with each other in a crossword style pattern. Each letter has a point value and a players scores points for the total point value of their word which also depends on where you place your letters on the game board.

Family Game Night: Life

Journey through the game of Life by traveling in a car, getting married, having children and collecting paydays. It is based on life and you go around the board doing things you would do in normal life such as buy insurance and go to college. Players spin the wheel and whoever ends up with the most money wins.

Family Game Night: Clue

Clue is a great game where you try to figure out a mystery. Three cards are put in an envelope regarding who did the crime, where they committed the crime and what weapon they used to commit crime. Through elimination and clues you try to figure out which 3 cards can reveal the mystery.

Family Game Night: Yahtzee

Yahtzee involves rolling five dice and you try to acheive various combinations of dice. As you achieve each one, you check it off on the list. You can reroll the dice to try to get the combination you need. If you roll all five dice with the same face value that is Yahtzee and you get extra points.

Family Game Night: Sorry

The game of Sorry is for 4 players and involves getting all game tokens of your color around the board game and into your safe zone. You use the Sorry deck of cards to see how many spaces you get to move on your turn. Strategy is involved because if you land on other player's pieces, you get to move them back in their start area.

Family Game Night: Trivia Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit is the great trivia game where you have to get questions correct in each category to get that color pie. Once you fill up your playing piece with each colored pie piece you need then you win. Questions have varying levels of difficulty and there are some editions based on specific subjects such as Disney or family.

Family Game Night: Scattergories

In the game of Scattergories you fill out columns of words based on the starting letter. For example if the letter you roll is a T then each word int he specific category has to start with the letter T. The game is timed so you may not be able to think of a word for each category. Each one correct is worth one point and if it is a two word answer you get 2 points.

Family Game Night: Boggle

In Boggle you shake up the dice-like cubes of letters and they will be displayed in a square. Players write down as many different combinations of the letters as they can to form words. There is a timer so you only have so much time and one side of each letter must be touching. Whoever gets the most words wins.

Family Game Night: Sequence

Sequence is a game that can be played in singles or partners. It is played with a regular deck of cards and you place your colored tokens on specific card values trying to get a sequence of five in row of one color. Strategy is involved as you can used Jacks to take a token off or use as a wild card.
