Metal Detector Technology
Metal detectors have been with us since the 1930s, but they have imporved significantly since then. They have great new features, like the ability to tell you what kind of metal you have found in the ground before you ever see it. The best machines can even tell you how deep the coin is in the ground, and actually what coin it is. These beasts can see into the earth!
Metal detectors were limited in the density of ground they were able to penetrate. But now they can go through all of that iron you find in the grounds of the Western United States. The new models are so much better at detecting in salt water that you can actually find some substantial metals in the ocean shores.
Even with all the new technology, it is a good idea to go to places that don't have a lot of junk around the area. Fewer noises are better because you aren't wasting your time so much with junk detections. Maybe look for that lonely tree that is sitting there all by itself.
I learned many more tips from Jack Thompson, who hunted treasure for 50 years. Take a look at my review of his guide The Holy Grail of Treasure Hunting.
