In Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen, the hero and party must enter the vault of defiled truth. The vault of defiled truth contains many monsters including the cockatrice and many many hobgoblins. This will guide the hero on how to defeat the cockatrice and will provide the party with a navigation guide of the vault of defiled truth, and up to the gutter of misery.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen Defeat the Cockatrice in Vault of Defiled Truth

To enter the vault of defiled truth, the party must retrieve the void key and then unlock the central door in the duskmoon tower courtyard (peaceful area with many rabbits and deers). Proceed into the vault. The map shows that the party must wade through dungeon waters containing many leeches. Destroy these annoying parasites and reach an area where the hero can turn left and head into hobgoblin infested areas or continue to the courtyard of the vault of defiled truth. Here, in addition to hobgoblins, the hero will face the cockatrice.

Luckily, compared to other supreme boss denizens of bitterblack isle, the cockatrice has only five bars of health. As the mage hero leader of the party, seek cover by running into corners or corridors of the courtyard where the cockatrice cannot reach easily and launch high comestion or powerful fire spells at the cockatrice. Try to aim the high comestion spell so that it will also catch the minion hobgoblins running around the courtyard. At the hero's level, the high comestion spell will incinerate the hobgoblins instantly, whilst doing quite good damage against the cockatrice. Allow the hero's pawns to tackle and climb onto the cockatrice, causing it to fall onto the ground eventually. When it falls, high comestion the fallen cockatrice and its health will plummet significantly. It will be defeated fairly rapidly.

Other tactics the hero can use include -

  • run around the courtyard and avoid the hobgoblin attacks
  • increase magick defense and prevent petrification
  • allow the pawns to take the blunt of the damage and petrification if possible

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen Explore the Vault of Defiled Truth

The vault of defiled truth is fairly easy to explore, being divided into the courtyard, the southeastern entrance area, the southwestern area, the northwestern area and upstairs. The whole area is mostly infested with hobgoblins. Defeat them and loot the areas. Then proceed to the Gutter of Misery. The entrance to this lies to the north of the courtyard where the cockatrice is found.

The second floor of the Vault of Defiled Truth is different in that it contains a winged siren rather than more hobgoblins. The way to defeat it is to try to ground the winged siren. Once it is grounded, the hero's fighters can climb onto it and defeat it.

Dragon's Dogma Gutter of Misery

After exploring the vault of defiled truth, enter the Gutter of Misery. Here there are two levels. The upper levels lead to an area of rest for the hero and party. Fill up empty flasks with holy water and purchase items and upgrade weapons and armor.

The lower level of the Gutter of Misery leads to the underground level of the Gutter of Misery. Here, the hero will encounter sulphur saurians. These invisible lizard like creatures will launch spring attacks on the party. Cut off their tails and the fight will become much easier. The key here is to transverse the area to a door near a waterfall. Go through the door to get to a major boss fight.
