How Join the Dark Brotherhood Guild in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster has amassed over 4 million players across all platforms! It has largely been a critical and commercial success for Bethesda. Oblivion Remastered is a huge medieval fantasy role-playing video-game with hundreds of quests. It involves many of the cliche "swords and sorcery" tropes that are seen in dark fantasy books and popular TV shows like Game of Thrones. Players can explore the huge province of Cyrodiil that is set in the fictional world of Tamriel. The game quite literally has over 200 quests, including a Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, Arena, Fighters Guild, and the infamous organization known as the Dark Brotherhood. Oblivion Remastered has recieved a huge overhaul in the Unreal Engine with higher resolution, dynamic lighting and shadows, higher texture quality, revamped character and creature designs, and a revamped UI with a multitude of quality of life features that enhance the gameplay experience. While Oblivion Remastered is still technically the same game with its unique locations and stories, it almost feels like a remake with all the technical improvements and quality of life features.
What is the Dark Brotherhood?
The Dark Brotherhood is a unique organization with a guild of specialized assassins that accept contracts for the gold and glory of the Night Mother. They are renowned for their deadly efficiency in completing contracts that usually involve assassinating someone.
Unlike other Guilds, the Dark Brotherhood is not exactly a benevolent and altruistic organization compared to the Fighters or Mages Guild. The majority of the members in the Dark Brotherhood are cold-blooded assassins that murder for gold and glory. The game leaves little room for moral ambiguity, however, many of the targets that are murdered are not entirely innocent or are shady individuals with loose morals. That being said, the organization is very cult-like and serves in secrecy while instilling fear to many in Tamriel.
Contracts with the Dark Brotherhood are initiated through a ritual known as the "Black Sacrament". Once a target is marked, they will stop at nothing to fulfill their contract. A powerful figure in the Dark Brotherhood is known as the Night Mother, an enigmatic and malevolent entity that is revered by many of the members within the clandestine organization. She is a mythological and historical figure in the Elder Scrolls series, as well as the founder of the Dark Brotherhood.
How to Join the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion Remastered
It won't be long before you overhear the citizens of Cyrodiil discuss rumors about the Dark Brotherhood and how they visit a person in their sleep after murdering someone. While the game does not explicitly state it; you must kill someone that is considered innocent. Killing goblins, bandits, or daedra does not count.
Joining the Dark Brotherhood involves several steps:
- Kill an innocent person in a discreet location, so not to attract attention from the law.
- Sleep in a bed in a secure location and Lucien Lachance will visit you and give you a quest called "A knife in the Dark."
- Go to the Inn of Ill Omen, it's north of Bravil on the Green Road.
- Kill a man named Rufio
- Sleep in a bed again and Lucien Lachance will visit you a second time.
- Fast travel to the city of Cheydinal and enter the abandoned building that's boarded up.
- Speak the phrase "Sanguine, My Brother" to enter the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, then speak to Ocheeva.
- Vicente Valtieri will give you your first contract.
I'd suggest to avoid killing the beggars for your initiation since they're significantly involved with the Thieves Guild. Additionally, don't kill any shopkeepers or members of the factions you're involved with. The strategy guide recommends to kill one of those Mythic Dawn agents in the main quest, specifically "Dagon Shrine."
If you're in the Mages Guild, one of the quests involve killing vampire hunters in Skingrad. They will count as a kill for the Dark Brotherhood. That's what I did in my game recently. I snuck up behind them while they were walking in Skingrad. Try to be stealthy. Daggers do 8x damage when sneaking behind.
Bonuses and Rewards
Some of the quests that involve the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion Remastered have special bonuses if you complete a secondary objective. They are 100% worth it considering the items you are rewarded tend to be useful or indispensable. For example, you'll be rewarded with "Sufferthorn" for completing the "Accidents Happen" quest. The Sufferthorn is an enchanted Elven dagger with leveled health and strength drain. It's relatively powerful, especially when your Blade skill is high. When sneaking, it will deal 8x the damage to an enemy, making it an excellent weapon for assassinations and stealth builds.
Many gamers in the Elder Scrolls community consider the Dark Brotherhood to be one of the best questlines. Some of the quests are unconventional and unique. Some major plot twists become revealed as you progress.
Shortcut to Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Cheydinhal
Once you complete a few quests, you'll be given a key to unlock a shortcut into the Sanctuary. Cheydinhal has a well with a trapdoor that serves as a shortcut for members. It gives you instant access to the Sanctuary instead of having to travel through the abandoned building each time.
"Have you not heard of the Dark Brotherhood? Of the remorseless guild of paid assassins and homicidal cutthroats? Join us, and you'll find the Dark Brotherhood to be all that, and so much more. We are, more than anything, a union of like-minded individuals." ~Lucien Lachance
