How to Play as a Vampire and Cure Vampirism in Oblivion Remastered
Besides goblins, trolls, and necromancers; you'll occasionally come across groups of vampires in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Vampires are not particularly common in Cyrodiil, but they appear in some of the dungeons. Janus Hassildor, an Imperial noble, is the Count of Skingrad who also happens to be a vampire. While Janus Hassildor is reclusive and hides his true nature, he plays a more benevolent role in the Mages Guild quest. Many of the vampires in Cyrodiil are dangerous or evil. Vicente Valtieri, an assassin of the Dark Brotherhood, is a vampire that will offer the player the Dark Gift. Vampires were a bit more prevalent in Skyrim due to the Dawnguard and the vampire follower named Serana - voiced by Laura Bailey.
Is Being a Vampire Worth it?
So how do you become a vampire and is it worth it playing as a vampire in Oblivion Remastered? For practical reasons, it probably is not; however, it may be interesting for the role-playing aspect. There are numerous downsides to playing as a vampire such as the sun constantly draining your health during the day.
During your adventures in Cyrodiil, you may inadvertently contract a disease called Porphyric Hemophilia when encountering vampire enemies. If you don't cure Porphyric Hemophilia, then you'll inevitably become a fully-fledged vampire. A cure becomes more difficult at that point.
How to Become a Vampire In Oblivion Remastered
- Fight vampires in dungeons and let them bite you to contract Porphyric Hemophilia at which point you'll become a vampire after several days.
- Join the Dark Brotherhood and progress in the story until Vicente Valtieri offers you the Dark Gift.
- Start the Azura's Star Daedric Quest where you'll encounter vampires that can infect you.
Where can I found vampires in Elder Scrolls IV?
There are multiple dungeons where you'll encounter Oblivion Remastered: Barren Cave, Memorial Cave, Bloodworks Sewer, and Bloodcrust Cavern. Forts such as Fort Carmala, Fort Hastrel, Fort Naso, and Fort Vlastarus may have vampires as well. The vampires at Bloodworks Sewer in the Imperial City respawn after three days. It works the same way at Bloodcrust Cavern that's east of Skingrad.
How to Cure Vampirism in Oblivion Remastered?
- Use a Potion of Cure disease after contracting Porphyric Hemophilia.
- Visit a chapel in one of the cities and pray at an Altar of Nine shrine before the affliction progresses.
- If your vampirism is at an advanced stage, use the Font of Renewal at Deepscorn Hallow (Vile Lair Expansion) south of Leyawiin.
- Complete the "Vampire Cure " quest
Vampire Cure Quest in Elder Scrolls IV
1. Begin the Quest: Speak to Count Hassildor in Skingrad Castle. He wants you to cure his wife that is afflicted with vampirism.
2. Gather Ingredients:
- Argonian Blood: Obtain this by killing an Argonian or obtaining a potion with the effect.
- A full black soul gem: Fill it by trapping a soul of a living creature.
- The ashes of Hinderil, a powerful vampire: You'll need to kill him and loot his carcass.
3. Prepare the Cure:
- Return to Halurs in Skingrad.
- Wait 24 hours while she brews the cure.
- Once the 24 hours have passed, she'll give you two doses of the potion: one for yourself and one for Count Hassildor's wife.
4. Cure Yourself and the Count's Wife:
- Drink the potion to cure yourself of vampirism.
5. Complete the Quest:
- Speak to Count Hassildor after a day passes.
- Return to Halurs, and she will lead you to the Count and his wife.
- Give the second potion to Count Hassildor's wife to finally cure the affliction.
Benefits of Being a Vampire in Oblivion Remastered
- 100% immunity to disease and paralysis
- Resistance to normal weapon attacks ranging from 5-20%
- Access to Vampire Spells and Skills
- Bonuses to Strength, Speed, and Willpower Attributes
- Bonuses to Acrobatics, Athletics, Destruction, Hand-to-Hand, Illusion, Mysticism, and Sneak Skills
- Hunters Sight, Vampire's Seduction, and Reign of Terror, and Embrace of Shadows unlocked
Embrace of Shadows makes you go invisible for several minutes, but it can only be used once a day. This is actually a pretty good ability, but a non-vampire character and efficient mage can craft spells that increase the duration of an invisibility spell if their Illusion Skill is efficient.
Begin completely immune to paralysis is one of the biggest benefits of being a vampire in my opinion. Enemies like Daedra Spiders can paralyze you, leaving you vulnerable to attacks and unable to take action.
The bonuses to your attributes and skills are nice, but there are many drawbacks to being a vampire. Not feeding for a long time makes a vampire stronger in Oblivion Remastered, but it has major consequences that you must consider carefully.
Disadvantages of Being a Vampire in Elder Scrolls IV
- During the day (6 am - 8 pm), you take constant sun damage when stepping outside - scales up to 8 points of hp lost per second at the higher level of vampirism.
- Fast travel is not possible during the daytime unless you wait until nighttime indoors or feed on an NPC to reduce your state of vampirism.
- Weakness to fire 20-50% of fire.
- Debuff to Personality attribute - characters won't like you cause their disposition towards you will be low.
Is Playing as a Vampire Worth it?
While the stat bonuses to your Skills and Attributes are beneficial, the sun damage mechanic may be frustrating and tedious to many players. Fast traveling is very important in the game because it enables you to travel vast distances in much shorter periods of time. The constant draining of your health can be mitigated with Restoration Spells or Potions, but it might be annoying to you or difficult to handle on higher difficulties - especially when being attacked by enemies in the day.
And remember that if you're caught feeding on somebody, you'll get in trouble with the law and will be treated as a criminal.
Vampirism can alter your character's appearance, including eye color, which some players might find undesirable. As your vampirism level increases, NPCs may become hostile towards you, making it difficult to interact with them. They may even attack you on sight.
Personally, I don't think being a vampire in Oblivion Remastered is worth it, least not in the long term. If you're on PC, you may be able to find and install some mods that remove some of the disadvantages. I'd suggest only playing as a vampire if you're doing it for a unique role-playing experience with increased challenge. I like vampire game series like Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver and Blood Rayne, but being a vampire is not that appealing to me in the world of Cyrodiil.
Perhaps that's why the effects of being a vampire changed in future Elder Scrolls games. For example, fast travel is possible whilst being a vampire in Skyrim. And while you're unable to naturally regenerate health as a vampire in sunlight, it does not constantly drain your health in Skyrim.
