Monty Python Fluxx - a Worthy & Quirky Card Game
And now for something completely different...
So, the new favorite game in our house is hands down Monty Python Fluxx. Hands down.
Having never played any Fluxx game before, Monty Python Fluxx was truly "something completely different".
When I bought this game, it was on a whim. I like Monty Python, and I thought maybe I could get a laugh from it. I was initially concerned that others in my house, who have not yet developed their appreciation for all things Monty Python, might be turned off by this game. I was pleasantly surprised they were not.
Everyone who I've played with has liked this game - adult Monty Python fans, adult non-Monty Python fans (aka idiots), and kids who have never even seen Monty Python. To the kids, this game is just full of characters - miscellaneous goofy characters, like Old Maid was when you were a kid.
How to Play
The thing about this game is, it doesn't have rules. Well, not initially.
At the start of the game there are just two things to do on your turn. Pick up one card and play one card from your hand. That's it.
The cards tell you what to do with them. They tell you what kind of card it is and what it means to play it.
Some of the cards are New Rules that add a new rule to the gameplay (some are quite funny), other cards called Goal cards change what is needed to be considered the winner. There are 3 other types of cards as well, Actions which just make something happen once, Keepers and Creepers. Those are the character cards that you collect to work toward the goal of winning.
The thing about this game is that it seems complicated to explain, but after a minute or so of gameplay, everyone knows what they are doing (as best you can with this game as what you are doing is constantly changing.) Don't be concerned with how complicated the game seems. I've played with 5 years olds who did fine (when someone helped them read the card).
Other Fluxx Games
Monty Python is just one of the many themes available for Fluxx. If your family loves pirates or zombies maybe one of these would get them to sit down for some family fun. The original Fluxx is a classic, but you can also find a zombie version, Batman Fluxx, Star Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx, Cartoon Network Fluxx and more.
Traditional Fluxx, the standard that is it's own theme. This game is so amazing. If your crew are not all Monty Python fans (there are some people who just don't get it), then try this game out. The game works just like the Monty Python version, filled with equal silliness. My family loves this game whenever we want to have fun without being so serious about competing.
