5 Best Simulation Games of 2014: Top Simulator Games for PC, PS3, and Xbox

Updated on October 15, 2014

Simulation Games: the Basics

Simulation games have players perform the tasks from "real life" in the form of a game. The purpose of these games could be training, analysis, testing, or just enjoyment. These games typically don't have specific objects or missions. Instead, they allow you to freely control a character.

Nowadays, developers are coming up with increasingly strange activities to simulate. There are now simulation games available for nearly every "real life" scenario you can imagine. Recently, a company released a game where you simulated a goat! If this trend continues, you can expect to find games like Dinosaur Simulator or Laundry Simulator!

But, the large number of simulator games it is a good sign for gamers like me. Many of my friends play first-person shooter, real-time strategy, and multiplayer online battle arena games, and keep trying to convince me to try them out. But I much prefer simulation games.

Simulation games have come a long way since the first one, "SimCity," was released in 1989. This hub will discuss my top five favorite simulation games of 2014.

#5 Farming Simulator

In Farming Simulator, you take on the role of a Farmer, growing crops and raising livestock to earn money. With the money you earn, you can buy new equipment for your farm. This game is a blockbuster and sold more than 1 million copies in its first year. I think it is the best farming simulation game on the market.

It has been released for all platforms including Android and iOS. A multiplayer option is also available. The developers of Farming Simulator have released five updated versions since 2008, adding new vehicles, machinery, environments, and animals. The most recent update is FS 14 which has been released for Android and is now available in Google Play for $2.99. To see what the gameplay is like, check out the video below.

#4 Car Mechanic Simulator

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 was released on January 14, 2014. In this game, you take on the role of a car mechanic, inspecting, diagnosing, and fixing car problems. In the beginning, the game can be difficult. But once you've played for a while, it becomes easier and very enjoyable. There are eight different cars you can work on in this game.

This simulation also has an "Career Mode" option, in which the player must complete 75 objectives in order to win.

#3 Euro Truck Simulator

Euro Truck Simulator 2 was released in October 2012 and is the second entry in that series. In this game, you take on the role of a truck driver. With a game map that covers almost all of Europe, a player can select any of that continent's 13 countries in which to play. The available trucks are extremely detailed and based on real-life models.

The game starts out with some quick tasks to earn money to buy a truck. You also have the option to take out a loan to purchase one. Once you have a truck, though, you earn money by delivering cargo, which can be used to buy new trucks and build your trucking business. This game was awarded "Sim of the Year" in 2012 by PC Gamer.

#2 Microsoft Flight Simulator

An oldie, but a goodie, the most recent version of Microsoft Flight Simulator (MFS) was released in January 2006. At 25 years, MFS is one of Microsoft's longest- and best-selling products, predating even Windows! It is also one of the most popular and best known flight simulators on the market.

The game objectives are pretty straightforward: you have to pilot a plane, carrying cargo and passengers to various countries.

After a number of shake-ups at Microsoft delayed a further edition, the company partnered with Dovetail Games, who will announce a new edition of MFS in 2015.

#1 Train Simulator

The world's most popular simulation game, the most recent edition of Train Simulator was released on October 4th, 2014 and is the best-selling train simulator game in the world.

You can play either in "Career Mode," in which you have to complete a sequence of different train routes, or in "Free Roam Mode," where you can select any of the trains and drive any of the routes, including the prestigious London-Faversham route (available as an upgrade).

This game has competition from Microsoft Rail, which, although released in 2001, remains the second-best rail simulator because of its new add-ons. However, in terms of graphics, Train Simulator is way ahead of Microsoft Rail.
