My 2 1/2 year old son is train mad and this article highlights and reviews a lot of toys he loves to play with and more. He especially loves his wooden train sets which he asks to play with everyday. He also loves Thomas and friends. Read on to learn more about trains for toddlers.
Wooden Train Sets For Toddlers
My 2 year old son plays for ages with his wooden train set. He puts all the pieces together to make the track (sometimes with a little help) and then he will push the trains around. I think the train sets with magnetic trains are the best as my son will spend a long time fixing all the trains together in a line and then pushing them around. There are lots of great wooden train sets on the market. Brio train sets are at the top end for quality and durability. But, you can't go wrong with a Melissa and Doug train set for great value. Check them out below:
The swivel bridge train set is a 45 + piece system. It includes ascending and descending track, track supports, a 3-car train, a covered bridge and a swivel bridge. The traffic gates automatically open and close on the swivel bridge for extra fun.
This is a great value train set. The quality is good and there are 129 pieces including lots of straights and curves. There are lots of accessories including roundhouse engine shed, trees, workers and even traffic signs. It comes with multi-piece trains and magnetic-tipped cranes, switches and a t-junction for passing lanes. A great highly recommended toy that will keep a toddler occupied for ages.
Thomas The Tank Engine Train Sets.
Toddlers love Thomas the tank engine. Buying a Thomas the tank engine train set can be expensive but it is an investment rather than a fleeting purchase. Buying a good Thomas train set means that your toddler may be playing with it almost everyday from 18 months to 3 or 4 year old and then they will still play with it on occasion when they are school age.
Fisher Price Thomas Take and Play sets are designed with an easy-fold set-up. This means that they are easily put away and stored and you can easily transport them to friends and family's houses.
In this set Owen the Traction Engine helps pull Thomas up the steep incline of the Blue Mountain. And at the loading zone, a spinning saw blade on the drop saw cuts the bluestone and deposits it right into Thomas’ cargo car.
The set includes the track and a die cast Thomas engine.

Thomas Trackmaster Train Set
Another alternative of train sets for toddlers is the Thomas trackmaster sets. They are motorised railways with motorised engines.
This is an impressive set.
There's a motorised Thomas and as he chugs around the track he has to avoid all the obstacles in his path.
Kids have to reset parts of the track as Thomas chugs around so that he doesn't crash!
Train Books for Toddlers
There are lots of train themed books that toddlers will love. Here are a selection of a few of my top choices.
The Usbourne Touch Feely books are great for younger toddlers in particular. Each page has different textures for little hands to touch and explore.
This is the perfect bedtime book that all train crazy toddlers will love to send them off to sleep. The words are soothing and the illustrations are bright and vivid.
Train Set Table for Toddlers
Train set tables are great for endless hours of play. They keep the playtime mess off the floor and at children's level. They normally come with their own train set. Most of them have good storage facilities so as well as being a toy they are great for storing all trains, accessories and other toys when they aren't being used. Some of the train set tables can be used for other play too such as with cars. Some of them have table tops which can be pulled over the train set and used for drawing. They are a great addition to any toy collection. Check out some of the options below.
This is a great value train set table. It comes with a moulded in train set and is the right size for the cars and trains that the toddler already has. The table top can then be used for drawing or other activites.

The set consists of cars, trains, signs, trees, people, and town buildings. There are mountain pieces to drive trains over and through.
Lego Duplo Train Sets
Lego Duplo are the lego sets with bigger blocks and they are great for little toddler hands. Lego has all kinds of themed sets including train sets. They are great because you can work with your toddler to put the sets together and then they will have great fun pushing trains around the track. As your little one gets older they will learn to build the tracks and accessories themselves.

Great Toy Trains for Toddlers
There are some toy trains that you can just push around the house or outside and don't need a track. The Melissa and Doug Stacking train has educational value and is particularly good for younger toddlers and the toddlers can use their imaginations with the wooden farm train. Thomas fans will also love the Thomas play set.
This Melissa and Doug train has cargo blocks which you can stack on the train. There are pegs for linking the cars together. My son loves trains which you can link together. He enjoys taking them apart and putting them back together. The reviews on Amazon state that the blocks need to go on the train in a certain way so that it will move. so there is an extra little puzzle for your toddler to work out. Toddlers should love pushing this around the house.
