Veggie Art
Creating Fruit & Veg Art
Creating little pieces of art by carving your fruit and veg is great fun, as well as being a great way to impress your friends and dinner guests. Imagine walking into a dinner party and seeing a watermelon carved into a plant sitting on the middle of the table - instantly you would have a first impression of the type of person throwing the party, and also a conversation point.
Fruit and veg carving is not a new practice - people believe that it has been around for hundreds of years, particularly in and around Thailand.
Skilled fruit and veg artists can create beautiful exhibits from a variety of fresh foods, but watermelons are the most popular. As well as looking colorful and beautiful inside, watermelons are very easy to carve, making them ideal for fruit and veg art.
Small fruit like Bananas and Beetroot are also great for carving into the shape of flowers and leaves.
Many fruit and veg carvers used special carving knives which are designed specifically to allow the carver the freedom to carve complicated, smaller designs such as flower petals. Standard kitchen knives can be used for carving - and are usually fine for carving larger items like watermelons - however for smaller fruit and veg dedicated carving knives are easier to use.
