Video Games Vocabulary

Updated on September 8, 2016

Reduce The Generation Gap

A lot of my fans have nothing to do with video games but they like the way I make the hubs....Ok fair enough. Some of them are parents having kids playing video games and they often are listening to them saying completely unknown words. Moreover let me not forget the people who are looking for a gift (video game)but they find themselves overwhelmed with unknown words.

That's why I am making this lens to help everyone squidooers or not understand all those weird words and help them reduce the distance between the old and new generations. Because whether we like it or not the video games industry has affected or will affect our lives at some point.

When I started playing video games I knew nothing about all those weird words. I didn't even know they existed. Over the years I ve learned more and more and I am still learning.

Lack Of Knowledge Can Make You Look Like A Fool - A funny story

Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age 2

A funny story showing how much ignorant I was and how I made a fool out of myself.

In my profile I say that my good friends gave me a lot of games in the past. This is so true and this story is from that time. It was my 3rd or 4th game or something and actually it was Mech Commander (magnificent game) and one of those friends was trying to help me and him understand what I liked so he could decide what to give me. So after I finished the game he gave me he asks me :

"So you like rpgs, right?"

"No I totally hate rpgs"

"But you have already told me that you liked Mech Commander"

"Oh yeah man it was was freaking awesome"

"So you like rpgs"

"No man how many times do I have to tell you that I hate them"

"But Mech Commander is an rpg"

"Oh really? Why you didn't say it then?"

"Then I like rpgs... Actually I love them"

And then I felt like a big fool watching him laughing his ass out. Because he was laughing with my ignorance. After that he knew that I knew nothing about genres so he told me a few things to help me clear out what I liked. And to make things right. In reriality Mech Commander isnt an rpg. It is a real time strategy game. BUT people have the tendancy to believe that when a player can equip items on their characters the game is automatically a rpg. In a rpg players assume a role, they make decision, they shape the story of the game etc...

Ok enough of that. In case you want to find yourself in a similar situation, then keep reading.

RPG - Role Playing Game

Dragon Age 2
Dragon Age 2

In this genre belongs every game where you have to do the following. Complete missions and quests. With every successful completion you get experience points. With enough experience you gain a level. With every level you acquire skill/attribute points and you assign them where ever you want (actually it depends on the profession of your character). One of the best parts of a rpg is that YOU are responsible of the equipment of your character. Your character lives or dies according to those decisions ( appropriate/right skills, attributes, equipment). And of course let me not forget that you have to take some important decisions in the dialogues where those decisions will shape the story of the game and the final outcome will be different. In a real, authentic rpg people have different experiences.

Shogun 2 Total War
Shogun 2 Total War

A strategy video game emphasizes in skillful thinking and planning to achieve victory. You will have to face strategic, tactical, and sometimes logistical challenges. So be prepared.

RTS - Real Time Strategy

Shogun 2 Total War
Shogun 2 Total War

Is a sub genre of the strategy games where every thing happens in real time. You have to take decisions now and not after 5 or 10 minutes. I believe is simple enough.

TBS - Turn Based Strategy

Shogun 2 Total War
Shogun 2 Total War

Is another sub genre of the strategy games. Players must complete all of their actions within a turn. There is no time limit but sometimes there are restrictions like movement restrictions (how far a unit can travel in a turn). Often turns represent a whole season (spring, summer, etc) or even a year in real time terms.

FPS - First Person Shooter

Mass Effect
Mass Effect

Are the games where the only thing you see are the hands and the weapon of your character. You never see his/her body or face (maybe his feet but that's it). It is like your eyes are the camera. The only thing you do is shoot everything you see. Nothing less nothing more.

TPS - Third Person Shooter

Mass Effect
Mass Effect

These games are almost the same with FPS games but you can see your character. His whole body, what he wears etc. You can see your character form "over the shoulder" or "behind the back" camera. You can also see the area surrounding your character.

SIM - Simulation

Dungeon Keeper
Dungeon Keeper

Can I have a ONE WAY ticket to hell please? Luckiest demon...bah...enjoy it while it lasts demon......You will see what happens when Psycho gets down there.

A simulation game attempts to replicate real life activities. This could involve anything. From running, cycling, climbing, driving, human relationships, running a business, space flight … name it. The most popular games are the vehicle simulation games. This involves cars, bicycles, motorbikes, boats, ships, trucks, trains, helicopters, airplanes even space shuttles. I am not kidding. What ever has wheels, wings, or it can float in the water.

MMO - Massively Multiplayer Online

Conan Online
Conan Online

I believe this is self explanatory. A lot of people from all over the world play in real time and online the same game .

Now there are also the combinations of those genres.

Is a combination of Fps + Rpg OR Tps + Rpg

Is a combination of Mmo + Rpg

Is a combination of Mmo + Fps or Mmo + Tps

And lastly there is another combination of the 2 sub strategy genres. You can have a strategy game where at the same time it will be a TBS + RTS......there is no name for that.

Have you ever heard any of those video game genres?

Facking Noob/Newbie

I left the noob word for last for a reason. The - newbie - word has evolved to something really bad, insulting. When someone calls you a noob he doesn't mean you are just a newbie. No. He means you are the most useless, incompetent, miserable piece of crap someone could ever meet.

You are the person who will ruin a good experience for everybody else. He means you pretend to know it all, seen it all but in reality you know nothing. He means you have wasted everybodys time.

He means you are the worst of everything. It is not just one word. Is a combination of multiple words, bad words and words with negative meaning. I can not describe with words how much I HATE THE word NOOB.

You see, a newbie is eager to learn. A newbie ALWAYS seeks out information on his/her own or he/she asks for directions when he/she doesn't know something. He/she is not shy to ask for that info or guidance in the fear that the others will look down on him/her. A newbie doesn't not pretend he/she knows - seen everything and when he has to apply that knowledge he majestically proves he is a huge bubble. We were all newbies at some point in our lives. The difference is how we handled ourselves.

I mostly talk about games here but the same teachings can be applied to real life situations. Games were invented by humans in order to do something different, to laugh, to have fun, to spice up their boring lives. And in the process to develop their skills, strength and knowledge. There is not always enough time for games. So when someone has limited spare time in his hands and his wants to have some fun by playing a game, he expects to have fun for the whole spare time that he has. No one has the right to ruin his fun time. No one.

Most of the times someone will call you -noob- even if it is his mistake or because he hates his life or because he has no life or because he hates people in general and he can't get along or because he has personal problems and issues (that is not an excuse) or because he thinks it is cool or because he is a big coward and he wants to have the last word by calling you noob and then he sets the ignore function on and you can't reach him. And the list goes on and on and on.

Playing an online game is a huge social challenge for me. By playing a game or interacting with people on the internet someone shows who he/she really is or who would like to be. So for me an online multiplayer game or activity in general is NOT just a game or just an activity. It is a challenge.

In conclusion..Don't you ever be a noob in games or in real life. You can be a newbie many times during your lifetime but do what ever is possible NOT to BE a NOOB.

Mainly when I write on the internet about video games I write about reviews. I have reviews at Hubpages but their most detailed versions, along with video games wallpapers and video games trailers can be found at PsychosGamers .

I really hope this hub was fun and you ve learned something.......You do not have to memorize everything but.... I would be glad If someone could tell me that now he can understand what their kids or friends are saying....and I helped them to do that. !!!

So if you liked it show me your love.....

What a cool lens, I'm not a gamer but I've heard couple of the abbreviations from my husband / friend without knowing its meaning. The presentation of this lens is excellent and I definitely learned something new now.
