Review Of The Xbox 360 Slim Console

The new Xbox 360 with features like a glossy black finish and quiet run is so much slicker and sleeker than the older version.

Ever been plagued by the old red ring of death? The Xbox was prone to over-heating and the noise problems, caused by its three fans, has now been resolved by incorporating fans at top, bottom and side, so no deadly deaths on the new slim Xbox.

So if you are looking for an Xbox 360 this really is a best buy. My advice? Get this one!

A Look At The Xbox 360 Slim Console

Free Xbox Live Gold membership

The Xbox 360 slim comes in two models: glossy black, 250GB hardrive and normal matte finish, 4GB hardrive.

In this new edition you also get:

- Built in Wi-fi

- Free Xbox Live Gold membership (1 month only)

- A 250 or 4GB hardrive

And no Red Ring Of Death guarantied

What is the Xbox 360 Slim Console?

The Slim Xbox, what's this?

The new Xbox 360 Slim or 360 (S), as some people call it, is an Xbox 360 but smaller better and "bigger."

It comes in 2 models: a 4GB hard drive and the 250GB HDD (hard drive disc). The 250GB console certainly has a bigger memory and is better looking cosmeticaly as it has a glossy black finish, but when one says glossy black finish, one also says finger print and dust magnet! It's a huge shame, when you get such a good looking console that, after 2 weeks, just when you want to show it to all your friends, you can see your finger prints all over it.

My advice is: when you unbox it keep the wrapping of the console and lay the side that has Xbox 360 engraved on it face down on the wrapping. This will stop the console getting scratched and damaged

The 4GB model is cheaper but it has a much smaller memory. On the plus side, it's kept the previous Elite's matte black finish, so no dust or finger prints magnet. A nice feature is that there are vents on the side, top and bottom so no Red Ring of Death (RROD) guaranteed; so that's pretty awesome.

(For those of you who don't know, RROD was with the old 360s, the console overheated)

Xbox 360 Slim Console Features

The Xbox 360 slim has vents all over it, (see above), and a nice chrome finish on the sides of the vents. It's also much smaller than the original 'fat' version.

The dimensions of the new 360 are smaller, (Height: 27 cm Width: 7.5 cm Length: 26.4 cm), and it's very light. I believe it weighs 2.9 kg, which is very light but a bit heavier than the Wii.

The console also has built in 11.n wi-fi so you won't need to go and buy a wi-fi USB or wired cable. The Wi-fi is also very fast so you shouldn't get lags when you go on Xbox Live.

Microsoft also took a leaf out of Sony's book and changed the physical push buttons to touch sensitive buttons. These are extremely sensitive, so if you have a dog, or sibling, (especialy a dog that likes to sniff new things like mine), they may touch the power button and your 360 will turn off. How annoying!! =).

XBox Live 3 Months Gold Membership - I've just ordered my 3 month Gold Membership XBox Live

So what is this and why should you order it? Why would you want XBox Live?

This is what I do with mine and why I wanted it: Xbox Live Gold is a membership that enables the user of the XBOX 360 console to play with friends, online or offline and much much more. I bought this because I am a huge Call Of Duty fan and playing with others makes the game much more challenging and alive. I can gather a loyal team of fellow enthusiasts around me and together we pit our skills against the 'enemy' teams - all real people playing a 'real' game.

Don't like idea of playing in a team? You can go solo too. If you work by yourself you don't have to bend to other peoples rules, you can mix and match your weapon classes as you like and take the challenges at your own pace.

  • On the left you have your regular AV cables (NoHDMI =()
  • On the right hand side your power brick, which is still big (but who cares your just going to hide it behind your Tv=D)

The Back of the Console

On the back of the console, you get three USB ports, AV inputs, HDMI inputs, Optical audio, which wasn't on the previous models, so that's a good thing for those who have suround sound in their house. There's also a Kinect port that is just resembling a USB port

The Setup

This is my tutorial on how to set the 360 up :) so enjoy! (Remember this bit is only for those who haven't had a 360 before).

Ok, so in your box you should get a Start Here guide, but you won't need it if you're reading this.

1) Take your console and put it aside for now.

2) Take both ends of the power brick and connect them; (one end to the brick the other to the wall outlet).

3) Connect the power brick to the 360.

4) Put one end of the AV or HDMI cables into the HDMI (If you have that) input or the AV cables in the AV input.

5) And your Xbox360 is set up.

Xbox 360 Console Setup On Screen

Console Settings

  • Once you've set up the Xbox, hover your finger over the power button. The 360 should make a welcoming "Beep" and it should start up.
  • Ok, so wait for this to load and then, if you have bought an xbox with a game inside the box, it should tell you to insert the disc that came with the console.
  • Once you do that, the 360 will turn off and restart.

  • Then the console will update, so wait for that. When it's done, there'll be a controller on your screen telling you to hold the guide button of your controller down. That will be it synchronized up to your 360.
  • Then it'll tell you to press A.
  • After that, the 360 will tell you your current TV settings and will ask you if you would like to change them to another or better image quality.
  • Then select your country and language.
  • After that, the 360 will tell you your current TV settings and will ask you if you would like to change them to another or better image quality.

  • Finally, it will ask you if you would like to put Console Safety on or off. I would put it off so then I get unlimited hours of gameplay. Put it on if you have young children, so that their gameplay will be limited. Once you've set up the Xbox, hover your finger over the power button. The 360 should make a welcoming "Beep" and it should start up.

What about child safety? You'll be asked if you would like to put Console Safety on or off. I would put it off so then I get unlimited hours of gameplay. Put it on if you have young children, so that their gameplay will be limited.

Now your console settings are finished.

Xbox Live Setup

How to setup Xbox Live easily

These settings won't take you long to do. First, the console asks you if you would like to connect to Xbox Live now or later, and via Ethernet or via Wireless. When you choose "Get Connected" the console will give you the following choices:

  • Ethernet or Wireless connections.
  • Then it will ask you to enter your enternet passcode.
  • Then it will test the network to see if it can connect to internet.
  • Then get to Xbox Live.
  • Then, the console will do a system update which should be pretty quick.
  • After that the Xbox will start back up.
  • Then it will continue to update.
  • When that's finished the console asks you if you would like to join Xbox Live.

You will have to create an account for Xbox Live.

The console will ask you if you want to get Xbox Live Gold, (which is included in the Xbox 1 month free after that you have to buy Xbox Live points), now or later.

While I am not a gamer at all you have certainly provided an inside view of the Xbox 360 for those who are interested in this version of console.
